Check your coach documentation carefully, especially the manual received from Vantare that should show the layout of the gauges and lights on the dash to confirm what that “oil temp” light is for.
Do you have a retarder? If you have a retarder and engage it on a steep downhill grade and the “oil temp” rises (especially above the water temp), then its very likely that “oil temp” gauge is in fact the transmission fluid temp.
I don’t want to beat a dead horse …. but there are potentially three “oil temp” gauges we should have on our coaches: engine oil temp, trans fluid temp, and differential (or rear end) gear lube temp.

(can’t get ride of the repeating text)

We all have to recognize that our dash boards are going to vary due to what our converters might do for their coaches, but also to recognize Prevost has made different dash boards depending on the model and model year.
Generally speaking late 80’s to late 90’s coaches with the flat dash and round gauges lacked “red lines” or limit markings. The later style dashboards do have some markings to define the operational limits. Some converters such as CC created their own dash, and some owners have upgraded them to a different style of dash. I do not know how the normal ranges or limits are shown on those dashes.
Some coaches have Prevost “message centers” and some information that might have been on a dash was displayed digitally on the message center which a driver has to scroll through to get information.
In a previous thread there seems to be confusion about oil temp. There might in fact be some coaches that display engine oil temp, but usually the oil temp display is the transmission oil temperature, and if an owner has a retarder that is one gauge to keep in one’s scan.
The bottom line is read the posts carefully to determine which dash display is being discussed because over the years there has been a multitude of configurations, gauge functions, and methods of displaying data or out of range information.

This is one reason this site is valuable…I would think if the guage said oil temp that is what it is..maybe trans temp? I will be at the coach tomorrow and ck all the coach manuels from both prevost and vantare..I do have a two statge retarder and I thought that was not on the transmission…will report back…..Thanks

If you have the Telltale dash and information center, your gauge mode looks like this and the first one is oil temp, then tranny temp then chassis voltage.

Victor, are you sure you’re not confusing a jake with a retarder ? Geo.

Geo, I might be confusing them ..are the two position button I have a jake brake? and is a retarder on the steering column using the trans for breaking..then I have only a jake brake, either way the oil temp is allways the same temp as the collant temp…thanks for keeping me straight
