New shoes for the bus
Posted by William on March 10, 2019 at 10:32 pmJust got 4 new drive tires for the coach.
Used the Michelin Advantage Program (thanks Stephen from Dupree Products) for the purchase of the tires. Got tires at St. Lucie Battery and tire in Fort Pierce, Florida.
They wanted to know if I was using FMCA program, but I had printed out the page that we have here on the site with all my updated numbers. No problem. They used Dupree as the Fleet Purchase, and of course my credit card was already called into Michelin and approved. So the purchase was seamless. Had to pay separate bill for the labor, balance , stems.
They know their way around a prevost chassis as Liberty Coach uses them for all their tire replacement needs. (about 25 miles north of Stuart, Fl) They were kind enough to use 60 degree stems for the outer dual and turn them so the Pressure pro sensor was easy to put on. They even hand torqued each nut on the rim to proper spec, nut just hit with air wrench.
Now the price breakdown:
Michelin X line Energy 315 80R22.5 $833.86 per tire
Dismount and remount tire $29.75 per tire
Balance tire $25.00 per tire
New valve stems $6.95 ouiter dual
$4.95 inner dual
Tom is hooking me up with a new pressure pro FX system, as I am ditching my old unreliable tireminder system to protect my new shoes.
Looks like PB & J for lunch for the rest of the year to pay for this. LOL

Thanks for the tire update William, the 315’s were more than I thought.
Pressure Pro order in the works, be back to you today, checking on the AC/DC Converter.

Yikes. I would hate to see how much a fat 365 tire will be. Our 4 have date code of 2013. Per what has been said on another thread, 2020 we will need Michelin to inspect them
Question: with the recent Michelin info change on tire age, why are sellers bound by the five year rule?
-
From experience, at 5 years or newer I have seen no tire issues with blow outs….Once you are at 7 years or more I have seen a lot of tires blow out and many at 7-8 years….On the flip of that, most people have not owned the coach for the whole period of time, so you don’t know the history of care for the tires….Also, we see blow outs and then when we check tire pressure on the rest of the coach there is a tire that is dangerously low…that being said then many owners aren’t as good as others at checking tire pressure and even temp when you stop at rest areas etc…..The damage done to a coach is significant typically with a blow out….So as everything else tire replacement and when is a personally choice…
-
Get your Pressure Pro guy’s, a blow out will ruin your day or worse. The danger is a road hazard while traveling, without TPMS you’ll have no idea a tire is losing air due to a nail, screw, piece of metal, etc.
It’s so easy to push a button or view your mobile device and confirm all is good before a trip and then peace of mind knowing you’ll get an alert if something is going wrong.
Contact me for you Pressure Pro needs.

I want to echo what Jeff has posted.
Age is indeed a factor in our tires. No matter how good a tire looks if it is older than six years old nobody recapping tires will touch it.
We as owners can get good service from our tires but the quickest way to destroy a tire is to run it at a pressure that is less than called for based on the weight it carries. Every coach is different, not only due to variations in how converters distribute weight, but also due to what we carry and where we carry it. The only way to know the correct pressure is to weight the coach and know each axle weight. If there is any doubt use more pressure than might be required, but never less.
A new owner that buys a coach with relatively new tires is making a leap of faith. If the previous owner ran a tire at low pressure, or had a poor quality tire repair done the tire might fail unexpectedly. Besides checking date codes when inspecting a coach, checking tire pressures looking for pressures within an accepted range may be an indication of proper tire care.
If a TPMS is not used part of every pre-trip inspection has to include a tire pressure check. Thumping the tire with a club is not a suitable way of checking pressures.

If you want a really nice way to display your PressurePro readings, get Jeff to integrate the data on your Crestron iPads.
Ours is set up to automatically open the tire pressure display on an alarm with the ability to override the alarm display (see the button on the left side).
We really like being able to see all the pressures on one big screen.
-
What is a good display option if you don’t want to use your phone on an older coach? Any chance there’s something that can share a display with a backup camera, popping up on an alarm?

Tom…
A couple of questions on the FX…
– Is an ancillary antenna/booster needed with our 45’ XL for the newest version? If needed, where is the recommended mounting spot, and what is the additional cost of the booster?
– We have rubber valve stems on our toad. Do I need to replace them with brass/metal stems to prevent stem deflection and resulting potential leaks?
– We use remote temperature sensors pretty extensively (battery bay, wet bay, referigerator, OAT). These all play well currently on the 433 MHz band. My understanding is that this is the same frequency band that is used for TPMS systems. Should we expect dropped sensors, interference, or have to choose between the TPMS and our current remote temperature sensor setup??
– What is the recommended receiver setup? I currently use a hardwired VMSpc system running on a small Asus Windows 8.1 laptop/tablet that is bluetooth capable. Will this platform suffice? Can it be set up to run in a concurrent or secondary window with VMSpc on my current machine?
Thanks in advance…

I have had an opportunity to ride with folks who had engine scanners and other data not ordinarily displayed. What I learned, but did not expect, was while having access to the information was fantastic people dwelled on it to the point where it became a distraction.
Most of our coaches have good basic gauges, such as oil pressure, coolant temp, volts, etc. Backing those instruments we have warning lights and in some cases audible alarms.
When I found myself scanning information that I never had available in the previous 28 years I realized my attention was not on the road. More often I was drifting a little left or right instead of being in the middle of my lane. At that point, other than a scan of the gauges I went back to driving. The Pressure Pro I have only displays pressures and temps when I push a button or two, or when something is out of range with an audible and visible alert.
My point is I know that information is valuable, but not if we begin to spend excess time worrying about a one or two pound pressure deviation or a degree or two coolant temp change or any other information that takes us from our primary responsibility.
What drove this point home was a lesson I learned about 40 years ago when I flew a really shitty instrument approach, and instead of flying the plane I was fixated on watching ice accumulate on the airframe. It was a humbling experience learning how taking my attention away from the primary task was potentially very dangerous.

Chad – See above, I added the stand alone monitors.
Mike – In an effort to not give you wrong information, you should talk to Pressure Pro regarding your technical questions. 800-959-3505
Rubber valve stems – I have them as well and have not heard of any issues. There’s literally thousands of those out there in the RV community on toads with good results.
Repeater – At this time the Repeater is not yet available for the FX, but I got an email today telling me they’re just about ready to launch it. The FX module can be located anywhere in the coach with available 12/24v DC or an AC/DC converter. Some have placed them mid ship, others up front and some in the rear. It’s kind of trial and error to be sure you receive the toad signals. The communication between the module and your mobile device is via Bluetooth. Those that have mounted them mid ship seem to have good results. A Repeater will eventually solve that problem.

All you need, Jon, is for Jeff to install the MobilEye system. It will notify you as you touch the lane marker and you can correct your position without even looking at the road… Allows you to keep concentrating on your expanded instrumentation.

Les, I already cannot see out of the windshield. With two dash cams, a pressure pro, and a GPS all hogging windshield real estate I need a bus with lane assist, automatic braking and a self parking feature to get me backed in at a truck stop. What I need is a Pressure Pro display with much bigger numbers and brighter numbers so I don’t have to get my bi-focals 3″ from the display to read it.
All kidding aside, one of my dash cams has lane departure warnings. Only problem is seams in the highway but not between lanes, black skid marks on lanes with poor painted lines, gouges in the road, etc. are all viewed as lane markings and it give me so many false alerts my mind now tunes it out. It also has a warning when it sees less space between me and the vehicle ahead, but almost 100% of the time it is a passing vehicle pulling in too close.

William and Susan,
Did you get an alignment done? And if so, do they call that a ‘laser alignment’?
Safe travels,

I was looking at a COACHNET AD today. It looks they have deals on tires. Including MICHELIN ETC.
I have always used them for service. At times they give you info on how to get your unit to get to a repair service or send service to you. They are used to big coaches.

Mark:
I did not get alignment done at that time, as I just had drive tires done.
they do have availability to do the alignment, but can not offer if it is done correctly there. My last alignment was at Prevost and all 8 wheels.
At St Lucie tire, they are only doing the front 2 tires.
