I was hoping if you bought them at the show Tom would install for free and give you 100 each for the old batteries… Is he not doing this this year?

Tom is busy washing coaches of PC members this year. He says he hasn’t got time to install batteries also.

I think Li batteries are going to have substantial benefits for a lot of members. Anyone that does a lot of dry camping and intends to retain the coach for a lot of years they will realize a lot of benefits.
But in anticipation of what is needed to make the change, especially for those who use auto-start I hope serious consideration is given to what has to be done to make them work with the way most coaches are set up today for the auto-start that measures a low voltage as the trigger to recharge.

The preferred autostart would be SOC (state of charge), but can also use volts. The Relion recommended low voltage disconnect is 11v. Using the graph, 11v is about 90% discharged.

I have read that the Relion Li’s will not fit in a Liberty classic that has three house batteries. Lifelines measure 19.5″ and Relion’s are 20.5″. That is from my memory banks , so dimensions could vary…
Is this correct Tom , do you know if three of them will fit in a classic ?

At Q there was a lot of talk about Battleborn batteries. Is that an option?

Lifeline 8D batteries measure 20.79 X 10.89 (footprint)
Relion are listed as measuring 20.5 X 10.5

I was the one who posted that they would not fit (The Relions). The lifelines are not 20.79 where it counts. They are 20.79 handle to handle – which stick out further than the base.
The 20.79 will NOT fit the liberty classic metal trays. The 19.5 is pretty damn close to a perfect fit. Lifeline and Deka AGM’s will fit that perfectly. However anything longer on that dimension will not fit in the tray.
I have communicated with Relion and they have indicated that those are their footprint dimensions and NOT handle to handle. I couldnt get them to measure the actual footprint as they responded that those dimensions were the footprint. If that is the case – then they will NOT fit the older Liberty classic 3 battery setup. .
And for clarification – Lifeline is excelelnt with their data and provides all their dimensions. And i can confirm that lifelines and Deka will both fit the Liberty 3 battery tray, but its almost an exact fit. The exact Lifeline dimensions are 196L x 10.22W. it is NOT 20.79 as listed on the dimension.

I will find out the exact footprint for the Relion 8D.
There is no worry though, you can turn them on their sides and takes up about as much space as a 4D. The Lifepo4’s can be mounted in any position.
If you have a Liberty Classic with (3) Lifeline 8D’s, you have about 380 amp hours of use (DOD 50%) and you could replace those with (4) Relion group 31’s and reduce the weight from 489 lbs to 120 lbs. Those batteries have a small foot print. Also would be cheaper than 2 8D’s. Show pricing 40000 vs 46000.

Jon it’s the same document I linked as well. But notice the footprint is significantly smaller than the reported dimension of the battery ?
but yes – you either modify the trays or find batteries that fit.
In terms of directional – I’m not sure I would trust that until you determine whose cells are in those relions and whether they allow you to turn them on their side. Lifepo4 batteries – many believed they could be turned in any direction but there seem to have some longevity issues of those that did. So depending upon which type of cells – determines whether things can be used in any or all directions.
And turning them on their side does not get rid of the problematic dimension – namely the 20″ one. You can’t solve that problem by turning it sideways….
as for 31s – you don’t gain anything there because you can’t put the 31s in an arrangement (due to the 13in side) in some way to get a multiple of that to fit. You would essentially end up with 3 x 31s or maybe another manufactures fourth would fit but not relion as the 6.8 side doesn’t fit in to get under 19.5.
But a size 24 battery fits 3 wide almost perfectly in to an 8d. But for whatever reason there are few of those options. It’s almost better to use xcell, calb or what not to come up with that dimension. Because Victron mastervolt battleborn relion etc are all stuck on that 13in width which doesn’t multiply well in to 19in of space.
I’ve tried many. I have many lithium cells. I have them in my boat and about to replace in to prevost as well. Trust me – the dimensions are important.
