Injector cleaners
Posted by Dave on October 21, 2013 at 4:17 pmThis summer while heading to California for the summer I pulled into the flying j in El Paso to fuel up. While paying I noticed a display of Howes injector cleaner. I purchased a bottle and poured it in the tank. We then drove over to the Rv area of their lot and dry camped for the night. Next morning I turned the coach on and did a walk around inspection. The engine was missing badly. The pro driver was flashing bad 1 & 2 injectors and the check engine light was on. The closest Detroit facility was 35 miles. Drove it there. Eventually ended up replacing all 6 injectors and the harness for safety sake. Sat in 105 degree weather in their dusty lot getting this repaired.
I am convinced the injector cleaner caused this problem. Coach was running great prior to this. Probably would not have been a problem if we had ran hard for an hour or so allowing it to mix well as opposed to letting it sit overnight.
Lesson learned do not put anything in oil, fuel, on or about engine that does not say Detroit diesel on it. Further if Detroit thought you need injector cleaners, etc they would sell it.

I hate to tell you 60 series owners those engines give a lot of injector and harness trouble for years the injector just had a 100,000 mile warranty now I think it is up to 200,000 miles warranty but not really sure on that
I have seen a lot of PO owners of coaches and RV’s at WW Williams thinking their injectors were under warranty only to get a bill that looked like a war debit
If you own a 60 series except injector problems it is going to happen and they like turbos also that million mile engine comes at a cost

Others may disagree, but I don’t add a single drop of additives to any of my fluids. Not fuel stabilizer, no cleaners, and no magic mystery oils.
Until Detroit and Allison and Rockwell list that stuff on there manuals nothing but what they specify goes in my bus.
Clean filters and regular use of the bus is the best medicine.

Jon,
Kinda reminds me of the guys who felt they just had to “improve” their Harleys back in the day with all manner of after market stuff. Carbs, cams, you name it.
All I ever did with mine was keep it properly maintained and it never, ever left me stranded, nor did it leak a drop of oil.
I often thought of all those “improved” bikes as I rode past them when they either failed to start or gave up somewhere along the ride.
It was my position that Harley-Davidson spent a lot more in engineering, research and development than I was willing to part with and that their finished product would likely perform quite well if I didn’t tinker with it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the same weren’t true with Prevost.

Paul,
I had one of the AMF Harleys. Bought in 1974 for around $3,000; sold in 1998 for around $9,000. Only things I had to do on it aside from routine maintenance was replace two flat tires, not at the same time, and the gasket between the front Jug and the engine case. Did the gasket change myself and never had any other problem. Put 50,000 miles on it over the 24 years I had it. Longest ride was a one day trip of 965 miles from Wilson, NC to Evansville, IN. On the interstate it would knock down 50+ MPG every time.
I miss not having it almost everyday. I took lots of gruff about riding a bowling alley. I don’t like to think what would have been the fate of H-D had AMF not stepped in to help keep their business going. I still have the original gas tank hanging on the garage wall. Oh yeah did I forget to mention I got rear-ended by an 83 year old man at a traffic signal so I had no choice but to upgrade to a larger gas tank and a new paint job on the whole bike. The original Champagne Gold was no longer available. Chose white pearl with gold highlights. The new tank graphics looked like a pin stripe job on the Eagle wings with an eagle head.
Carole has been very happy over the sale of the H-D. She was anxious everytime I took it out for a ride. She only told me that after the sale.

Di and I have a deal. I get to buy a Harley anytime I want and she gets to dye her hair.
I don’t have a Harley and probably never will. And I don’t have to come home to someone who looks like Lucy.

There’s a reason behind our agreement.
Way back when we had a pair of his and hers 3 wheeled Hondas. They weren’t very fast but they could go almost anywhere in any season. So we used them all year round, including winter when everyone else was on smowmobiles.
There came a time when I felt somewhat invincible. I was out playing on mine on some new trails and I managed to break my wrist. After several hours of pain I relented and went to the emergency room where the grumpy doctor gave me a lecture and a cast.
The next day I went out riding again, and equally sure of my skills I manged to break the cast. When I got home Di was not happy, and it was a quiet ride to the hospital to have the cast replaced. It was not a fun experience because the doctor that fixed the cast was the one that put it on in the first place. He was even grumpier than the first time.
I’m not allowed to ride motorcycles.

Will,
That white pearl is one of my favorite colors. I’ll bet with the gold trim it looked awesome!
My longest ride was from Vineland, NJ (near Atllantic City) to Rapid City SD.
Man,…. those were the days!!

You guys are wooseys, I rode my 55 Pan from New York to CA with a broken ankle, broken wrist, no helmet, a biker buddy strapped on my leg, only stopping for gas, cigarettes, beer and hot dogs, then turned around rode back to Key West, then home to NY during a snow storm, no windshield and did it in 5 days.

In 1974 rode a 72 Sportster from Dallas to Alaska up the Alcan on 1800 miles of graded shale road. 8 flats, chain wore a hole in the oil tank around Dawson, 16 straight days of rain and so much fun I still grin ear to ear when I think of it.

Is there any chance you guys can bag what you are spreading and bring it up to me for my garden?
George, can I borrow your boots? It is getting deep in here.
