  • High Idle Quit

Posted by Davy on November 9, 2017 at 7:53 pm

My high idle quit. I will give you the circumstances in case they are relevant.

We stopped in a rest area after driving a couple of hours last night and I was going to sleep 4-5 hours. I left the engine idling because it was very cold. The bus heat keeps us cozy warm.

After two hours the high idle quit. The change in the engine woke us up. It took me a minute to figure out what was going on. Once I realized it was no longer on high idle, nothing I could do would help.

I have driven all day today and each time I stopped, the high idle did not engage. The transmission is in neutral, the parking brake is on and the high idle switch is on.

I thought there might be a relay outside under the drivers window or in the box above the engine but nothing that I could interpret as relating to high idle.

Is this a relay or breaker problem? Is there some way the transmission in neutral and the parking brake is not being noted properly? Has anyone had the high idle just quit while engaged and idling?

I agree with your thoughts on something not getting reported correctly. Have you shut everything down and re-started to see if that could get it back working? Sometimes something that simple will fix weird issues…. Parking brake and transmission are the only things that come to mind right now.

Yes, I did shut down. I tried it a few times during the day. Thank you for the suggestion.

Obviously the switch itself, Relay R-22,Does your park brake light come on in the dash cluster? The High Idle has to see via a pressure switch the park brake on..if you are getting the dash indicator light then you should be able to rule out the pressure switch

These are the light that are on idling with the brake on now.

Now I can not remember what is usually on. No light change when release the parking brake but have not rolled yet. I will momentarily.

    Jeff,

I remember now. The parking light is in the top row of lights about the 5th light over from the left. It does not come on with the parking break engaged.

I guess that means I have a signal problem or the parking break is not truly engaged. I will be driving now but I will have my wife check this thread periodically.

Correct there is a pressure switch that tells the light when park brake is on and then sends signal to allow hi idle….

No progress on the high idle problem on my part but I have to give credit where credit is due. My wife “fixed” the high idle and it works perfectly.

    What was the problem?

I have not solved the problem yet, but my clever wife wedged a piece of wood between the dash and the gas pedal. She keeps it right on 1000 RPM’s.

Heck that stick is also a good cruise control device when it starts acting up.

    Zero maintanence on the stick!

We traveled a short distance today and the stick worked fine while idling. The cruise works, so I did not try it for that.

As I have mentioned, the problem seems to be the high idle does not receive the message that the brake is engaged although it is and working fine. Jeff is wallowing that in his mind and will have a genius moment soon, I am sure.

For kicks and grins I replaced the R22 relay that Jeff mentioned before all the facts were known and it was not the culprit. For future reference the R22 relay on my vintage is a 24 volt relay located in a shoe box size enclosure on the floor of the compartment under the front seat. The schematic is on the underside of the lid.

It also has relays for the ABS, engine brake, two breakers for the ABS and two resistors for Fast Idle DDEC CTR.

I had a similar problem with an H3 a few years back. It was caused by a fuse in the drivers bay that had blown, causing the brake light switch not to activate the brake lights, so the high idle would not work,.

It happened while at Prevost Jax one day, they replaced the fuse (automotive type fuse) small amp too. After that, no more problems with it.
