FIRE ! Causes
Posted by Bob on January 24, 2012 at 6:59 amOne of our biggest fears! Mine any way. the 98 45 XLE I’m rebuilding was bought as a salvage shell. reason rear tag brake fire. The owner drove his coach a short distance from storage to his home for cleaning and parked outside. Went inside returned and coach was on fire. Fire department was close and put out quickly. Total loss. I purchased. No damage to Air brake system on drive axle. all damage was on tag brakes which also have parking brake function. Apears to me it never released on them and super heated the rotors. When in motion the heat was transferred into the moving air; when stopped it transferred into the rubber on the tires and ignited them. This took minutes to raise the temp to ignition point. I talked to insurance adjuster and was his opinion also. I ask my self??? Smell? Brake drag?would I have noticed it? Actually DKO recent air line problem revealed a rubbing problem between air line and battery cable that could have been a future major fire. So maybe air line problem was a blessing in his case and he caught a potential major problem. I will check any where My cables cross a air line for sure now.

Randy ;is a Entertainer coach operator and a fire fighting expert. Jin Shepard Provides Fire systems to NHRA and the RV industry-He is a Eagle owner. I do have Jim Shepards product and feel it is on top for The uneducated use for people like my self ,wife,or grandkids. He said I should be salesman for him. I told him you don’t need one for something that works. Bob

Brake fire is what I was told. Today I talked to Mike G. The actuall owner that was there. Good and bad news. Bad for him he had fire. Bad for me I reported wrong reason.. Be aware brakes are most common reason…. After talking to Mike he shared he had purchased several coaches from same converter. Two have burned. The one in front of his home is pretty well as I was told. A short trip to his home to clean and after a brief time a fire started. Cause of fire was a poor electrical instalation of a power supply cord in rear drive axle bay- not run in conduit or protected in any way. Arced to frame =fire. Was shown to him by fire inspector. Great guy and is sending me pictures of fire. During my tear out of interior I found several electrical issues which made me do a complete tear out to bare walls. Now I am glad I decided to do that. That is good news. Facts as I know to be true. If I screw up I will stand up. Bob

I was checking out my batteries. When I finished, I closed the battery drawer and started the coach. After doing so, I decided (thank God) to re-open the battery drawer. When I opened the drawer this time, the 12 volt cable was on fire. I was able to put the fire out easily, but if I had not checked, I’d have lost this coach.
The half tap (12 VDC) cable had been rubbing the
frame for who knows how long – the coach was new to me at the time – and there was a hole burnt through the steel frame at the back of the multiple battery drawer.
Turns out that the PO had connected the half-tap wire to come off the terminal toward the frame, rather than to loop around into the cable tray. Could have cost me the coach.

One very significant problem I have seen often on numerous coaches is the number of inches or feet from battery terminals to the circuit breakers. Every one of those inches or feet are not only lacking any sort of circuit protection, but have sufficient electrical energy to create and maintain an ignition source.

Was of coach I am rebuilding now. Was taken by owner at onset of fire. Was caused by poor electrical install by converter(professional). He had purchased 3 from same converter 2 caught fire. Cause of fire as per fire department and visual confirmation by owner. Bob

In this case: A fire surpression system or proper fire extinguisher would have turned out to be a real $ savior. I have the Cold Power system my self. Now! I feel as a novice I would have been able to save this(now my bus). New technology exist to detect rise in heat in wiring harness that can cause fires/or battery feed cables. It will never happen to me??? only has to once.! I have no finicial intrest in this product. I am eager to encourage friends to use to save lives and equipment. Easy /in expensive. Bob

Sort of wanted to bump this up for pictures of fire progression and how it could have been put out with a good fire system. This is all repaired now. Bob

Bob, thanks for the mention of my system. I have closed the RV Safety Systems business, but I still sell the fire detection part of the system (a product I developed). I have written a paper on how the build the fire suppression side of the system (which the fire detection system can trigger).
I don’t want to make this an advertisement, so that is all I will mention.

Jim,
Don’t worry about making it an advertisement. If you feel the equipment is appropriate and beneficial for Prevost owners post the information. Unlike other sites whose sole purpose is commercial our objective is to provide Prevost owners with as much information as possible. We do need our advertisers because they make it possible for us to provide Prevost Community, but I don’t see you as competition to any so feel free to inform us.
We need more information, not less.

Jon, thanks for the comments.
I hope to get some data on my new site in the near future. Really not going to run it as a business, but more of a service to my previous customers a referral customers. Hate not to offer technology that could help protect RV owners.
This has sort of become an obsession for me. We developed a second generation system for a customer that wanted to market it to the industrail truck market. I am now working with a university on the possible development of a third generation system that could talk to the CAN systems in the advanced coaches. How’s that for being out of the business and being retired {grin}.
Untill I get the data up, folks can contact me at: jim at firedetectionguy dot com

Jim it would help if you could offer a thumbnail description of what the safety system is, how it works, what it protects, what is involved in installing it and the scope of what it covers.
Also recognize that few of us own multiplex systems so while the system may be able to communicate via the multiplex communications system it is likely those few are unlikely to be your market because Prevost is offering a fire suppression system on later model coaches.
I suspect your real market is on the older coaches so that’s who you need to address. Then if folks want to follow up with you they will have a better idea of if you are selling smoke detectors or sprinkler systems or something more sophisticated. So far I know Bob and I are victims of fires and you likely have our attention.

I know Jim well as does Ken(hard headed ken) of this board. He is stand up guy. Jim has helped me much in the past with projects. He is running a 60serries with a 10 sp eaton autoshift in a Eagle. Quite a feate in it’s self! Bob
