2 selling points for Newell for me over a X or a H series Prevost 1 is the siding Newell dosen’t use the fiberglass I am not a fan of fiberglass 2 is the welded steel frame bridge construction I have drove both and really I cannot tell much difference expect the Newell to me drives better in high winds than a HMy friends Newell has the mirrior stainless siding on his one would be hard pressed to find a better looking coach than his Newell, I see Roger Penske has both Newell and Prevost at his place in Scottsdale that I don’t get both are new lol with his money it’s about like buying 2 pickups for him

Yes they will Mark, just another indication of it being a coach, not a bus.
Soon Mark I am afraid you will have paralysis by analysis. You are located in the Coachella Valley as I. If you wish I will let you drive my bus and you can then go drive a Newell and we will stop the madness.

Luvrbus, if they took the storm shutters off the windows (window awnings) it has a chance.

There is no madess just keep it in mind the Newell is in the H class and to me there is a big difference in driving a H than the XL or the XLL both to me are a better driving bus than a H series the New Mexico winds can be a challange in a H series to me anyway

I feel so left out. Here I am driving a bus and I am not worrying about having more horspower so I can drag race up a hill.
It’s obvious my priorities are screwed up because I thought if I needed to speed to get somewhere on time that I should have left earlier. I am so screwed up I consider myself on vacation as soon as I am in the driver’s seat, not when I get somewhere.
But I have to admit if I wanted to impress the common man there is no better way than to brag about my gazillion horsepower bus than can spin the tires in top gear.
Really guys……….is the performance of our coaches so bad we need to add even more HP and torque? FWIW back when we got our first coach which was a 475 HP 8V92 with a 5 speed Allison and a 69 to 72 MPH top speed (depending on whether you were going up or down a hill) there were guys crying and whining they needed more HP, Detroit Dealers were raking in the cash reprogramming the coaches to give more HP, and Prevost responded by getting 500 HP engines. 24 years later it is the same old stuff, just a different day.
Just to be a smart ass I should go out and buy a semi that will accelerate up the steepest hill, and then go looking for Prevost coaches going up that hill just so I can pass them and play with their minds. I will make sure the truck looks like it is wore out and incapable of pulling toilet paper off a roll.
Am I the only one that would trade horse power for the ability to stop as fast as the average car? Think about that boys and girls. Our problem isn’t going fast. It’s stopping.

Mr. Mark
Would you have the Newell owners site address ?
-
http://www.newellowners.com a good size board with almost 9,000 members it’s clean also just like this one -
These are the three sites that I’ve been visiting…

Back to power…. I don’t want to win a race going up a hill. I want four slides and that adds weight to any coach includiing a Prevost. I would like to see Prevost offer a 600 hp engine. Prevost went from a 515 hp DD to the 500 hp Volvo as you all know but they didn’t get any lighter.
The new Marathon’s 2014 floorplans don’t show a full bath in the rear of the coach anymore. The half-bath is in the back with the full bath in the middle with the shower open to the hallway (like we have now with our one bath coach). Newell has conquered the emission space needed and still offers the full bath in the rear with a half bath in the middle.
Millennium is showing floor plans with full rear baths.
But don’t get me wrong, I love Prevosts, I like the they way they look, the quality, etc. I have always admired them.

600 hp sounds like a lot but the difference with 525hp on a 6% hill is not all that great. Using the CAT performance charts, a 525hp coach will do 44mph up that hill, a 600hp coach will do 49mph. These figures are for a coach that weighs 52,500lb. Anything heavier will do substantially worse.
Turning off the OTR while you pull the hill will give you half the net hp gain (30hp). You’ll barely notice the additional horses.

We’re going to the Las Vegas motorcoach resort for a week. That will give me a chance to think about all of our options. Maybe I’ll get a chance to chat with a few RV owner’s of all brands. If any of you are going to be there, please let me know!
Everyone have a nice weekend!

Mark,
We are here now but leaving for Reno on Sunday…. If you want to talk to owners of both Newells and Prevost conversions… head to Motorcoach Country club in Indio, CA…. We were just there and there are tons of both there…
Good luck with your search…

Just curious, you have 425HP and I think 1,200 ft/lbs of torgue and don’t believe that an additional 75HP and 550 ft/lbs of torgue will be enough of an upgrade. It also looks like your Dynasty weights roughly the same, about 50,000 lbs, as a Prevost (depending on conversion). Is that correct? If so, you must really hate the performance of your current Dynasty.
Take up Bernie’s offer to drive his and then report back with your opinion. He has plenty of power; he generally is towing a stacker and I’ve never heard him complain.
-
Hi Gil,
The Dynasty weighs 40,029 lbs. at the last weigh in.
I want to drive a Prevost with a Volvo engine as that’s what I would be getting if I order one. I’m going to drive the 600 HP Newell in a couple of weeks.
Bernie’s offer is greatly appreciated.
We always make it over any hill while in the Dynasty. The slowest speed that I have recorded was about 29-30 mph going up that huge grade in Colorado going east. If I get behind a semi going 15 mph, then I’ll be going 15 mph as I just don’t have enough power to pass once I’m on the hill. I don’t want to race up, just have enough reserve power to pass if needed.

Mr.Mark,
Myself being in the Entertainer Coach Business, I can tell you a Newell makes a pretty MotorHome,Yes a Pretty MotorHome. I know an Entertainer personally that tried to use a Newell to travel in on the road and it didnt work!!. The Newell just could not handle the miles we put on every night,The interior shook apart,It squeeked,Had water leaks and on and on. If you are only going to drive a little and sit a lot a Newell might work for you,But if you are going to put any miles on In my opinion you want be happy. I myself am in the same boat as you as far as power on a new Prevost goes,I am in the process of trying to buils a new Star Coach for the Entertainer Lease Coach business and am not happy with the only engine choice being a Volvo engina rated at 500 H.P.. I keep waiting for an announcement of a higher H.P. version or a different manufacturer all together. I remember the days of a 45′ coach with a 6V92 Detroit and how my right leg would hurt all the time from pushing the accelerator down trying to get some more speed out of it,And I dont want to go back there especially to the tune of 1.5 million and more!!! I looked at Newell for interior ideals,But would never consider one myself to replace or compete with a Prevost shell. These are just my thoughts based on previous expierence. Once you own a Prevost and spend some time with it you will understand the difference,The quality control of Prevost is second to no one and they are designed and built to run. It is proven by the many, many coaches on the road.My Entertainer friend sold his Newell and bought a Model 10 Eagle coach to replace it with,That was better than the Newell. It is your money,So it is your choice,These are just some friendly advice from someone that has been there. Good luck with your choice!!!

“ I don’t want to race up, just have enough reserve power to pass if needed.”
In other words you do want to race to the top. As much of a type A as I am, sometimes I am just as happy staying in line and relaxing. I learned a long time ago that with hills it is more about strategy than power because no matter how capable I might be to pull a hill, if a truck jumps in the fast lane to pass a slower truck, he just decided for you how fast you are going up that hill.
So when you consider that you will be paying for all that horsepower all the time, how does that make up for the few times a year you aren’t happy with your hill climing speed?
And Robert…….get your foot off the accelerator. Your cruise control makes more HP than your foot, and using your foot to try to squeeze more speed on a hill actually drops your available HP.
