ENGINE NOISE
Posted by joel on July 28, 2022 at 10:49 am250 miles into a 9000 mile trip and the engine has developed a tapping noise like a collapsed hydraulic lifter in an old car. Still seems to be running ok.
I had the top end run at about 100k; now at about 260k. Am I going to make it?

I sure wouldn’t get to far off beaten path. What might be a 500$ adjustment now might end up being 20plus thousand if it lets go… Do you have any engine codes on sel?
-
I would not risk it. If you can hear it and know it is not normal, get it checked out ASAP. You could destroy the engine if it is something serious.

Drove it another 300 miles to salt lake city. Noise is now gone but I’m running on 5 cylinders. Detroit dealer in salt lake is trying to squeeze me in.
Unless this issue was caused by the people that ran my top end years ago, my series 60 certainly isn’t living up to reputation.

When they did top end did you get new adjusters see thread for details.

INTERESTING! Thank you. Pretty sure nothing was replaced at the time of my top end adjustment. Do you have any idea of engine numbers or years affected?
-
Pretty sure your engine is one with old adjusters
Why did you say you were running on 5 cylinders?

I can feel the lumpiness off idle, slight vibration in the strg wheel at idle and lack of power on any grade at all.

The above pictures of the adjuster was me and that was on my 2002 Marathon, 2001 chassis.

Thanks. Earlier, when I looked at the linked thread, there were no photos…now there are.
So you’re saying your 2001/2002 had the old clip type buttons. If that’s the case, I’m certain my 1999 engine came that way originally.
Do you know when the unitized adjuster showed up? Curious because I’m guessing the top end was run on mine about 2007-8.

up to about 2001 the engines were pre egr. Big changes occured in the 60 serries at that time. I prefer the pre egr engines myself. Still no smoke of any color???

Broke down while on a trip and had similar problem with my
other coach (2001 Marathon/2000 chassis) a few years ago.
Had one injector crap out. Had to have engine pulled to get to it
(engine had Jakes).
Replaced injector and all of the adjusters.

Ceramic roller on the rocker arm broke. I’m running but it dinged up the camshaft. We did a minor cam grind…I’m told camshafts are on national backorder.
I think the ceramic roller is a BS design. Anyone know if there’s an aftermarket steel roller rocker?
Only about 8000 miles to go if she holds!

If any of you are interested in outcome:
Drove about 1500 miles from salt lake and engine started missing again. Continued to drive another 4000 miles on 5 cylinders to complete my trip. I was pulling a stacker and about 70K gross. No holding of speed on uphills; passing only on downhills; ok level as long as you didn’t have to pass anyone!
Pulled valve cover at home; found #1 fuel injector rocker ceramic roller broken again. My engine had ceramic rollers on injector rockers and steel rollers on valve rockers. Upon close inspection, several steel rocker rollers showed wear and the camshaft was also worn. Drained oil; analysis showed no coolant or diesel fuel and moderately high steel content which was certainly no surprise.
To say I was disappointed to have such problems with an S60 at about 280k is an understatement but my limited research (and the fact that fuel injectors and camshafts are on national back-order) indicated this is not an unusual failure.
Went ahead with installation of detroit diesel reman’d fuel injectors, rocker arms and camshaft. I had to locate fuel injectors and camshaft. Acquired set of reman’d rocker arms from detroit because of the costs of replacing all rollers and I wanted the new unitized adjuster screws meant it was almost a push. Here’s the kicker: ALL rocker arms came with ceramic rollers!!! I have no real idea if this is good or bad.
It now idles beautifully. Hopefully, I can work up enough nerve to actually drive it soon! LOL

I’ve been on this Forum for close to eleven years, going on nine years of Prevost ownership with a Series 60 (98 shell). The two incidents of roller rockers mentioned in this thread are the first two problem incidents that I can remember being barfed up. Certainly not a pleasant problem to have, but apparently not a prevalent problem.
I’m surprised that a ceramic roller is used. I’m certainly not an engineer, but I would think that the proper steel roller would be preferred. But I’d think that the Detroit engineers had a reason. I wish that someone from one of the top Detroit rebuild shops or someone in Series 60 service from Detroit were on the Forum and would comment.
Joe did you contact the shop that did your valve train/injector service about your problem? They have any thoughts?
Anyone else have a valve train problem?
-
Dick: Not sure what shop you’re referring to. The overhead was run by a shop at about 100k…long ago. The salt lake road service just replaced the injector rocker arm and there was obviously some camshaft damage at that time so we were just putting a band-aid on it hoping it would last through my trip.
Making a judgement relative to the failure rate from this forum is probably pretty tough. I’m willing to bet you won’t find many coaches approaching 280k.
