Mike-
I meant, since you know the build number, they may have the records of exactly what your coach had on board when it left the factory. As to the “missing Vanner” and the wiring diagram on how they were wired.
-
The Prevost service manual for our coaches is available on line on the Prevost Car web site under parts and service, technical manuals.
-
Luc, I did contact them yesterday, they don’t have any records going back that far.
-
Jon, I have seen all the manuals and information online and downloaded it over the past year and a half. I have not seen a whole lot of detail related to my issue. I am not really concerned with removal and installation, my quest is to find a service center that knows what these behemoths are and can get parts if needed. I am looking for someone on the West coast preferably, but willing to talk to anyone in the country at this point that services these Alternators.
-
Mike, you might want to contact the folks at http://www.elreg.com. They should be able to help. They’re a DelcoRemy dealer/distributor and sell all the parts etc.
-
Many moons ago my alternator was failing. Only two of the three sections were providing output so I had to decide if I wanted to rebuild it or replace it.
I found Elreg and checked their prices for parts (about $300) or the whole new alternator (about $700) which was what a professional rebuild would have cost.
I bought the new one from them thinking it would be a Chinese knockoff. It was not. It was a genuine Delco, and even did not require a core charge. I do not know how costs are today, but I do know the Prevost procedure for testing showed me what was wrong and what was needed to be fixed or replaced and at the time a new one from Elreg made the most sense.
-
Elreg, yes. I have seen you guys post about them in the past. Definitely a good option.

Today I am continuing my quest to find out why my batteries are not charging from the 50DN. In looking at the Voltage regulator, should there be a path between the 3 terminals? I can’t find any literature on this unit. Maybe someone with meter and one of these in their bus can check for me?
-
24v DelcoRemy # 1118447 obsolete
You can still find them used at salvage yards, visonerv.com, ebay, etc.
Or you can replace with Transpo D805.
-
My bus 50DN is 12 Volts. The VR for my setup is Transpo#698
-
If there is ever any doubt if the 50DN or the regulator is the problem a simple test is to use a jumper between a positive battery post of the same voltage to the field wire of the alternator.
Make sure you have a multitester hooked up to measure alternator voltage out put. Doing that by passes the regulator so if you start the engine and the voltage is heading too high you know the alternator is working and the regulator s not. No voltage output and the alternator is not workiing. I take great pains to never let the voltage go past 29 and actually if it is past 27 and rising you have your answer.
-
Oh Man, that is exactly the kind of advise I was looking for. I was leary about jumpering things, but this will tell me in 1 minute where the issue is. Thanks!

OK here is what happened: I was unsure about powering the field wire unfused so i put an inline 3 amp fuse in between the battery and th field terminal on the alternator. As soon as I touched the +12VDC the fuse blew. Was I wrong to be safe and fuse it? What happens inside the alternator to cause this?
Update: It looks like the field stud is shorted to ground, What would cause this?

I have decided to pull the 50DN, plug the hole and put a belt driven alternator next to the chassis alternator. They are getting too hard to find, maintain, and for charging my house batteries, I am going down an easier path. For anyone that has not seen the top of the engine looking thru the access cover in the bedroom, here you go. I am pointing to the 50DN in the first picture. In the second picture is the flywheel cover that the 50DN bolts to. (not from my engine)
-
Here is what the engine looks like with the flywheel cover removed. The 2 large gears are the camshafts, the one on the right side in the picture drives the 50DN. (Again, not my engine)
