  • Discount fuel card

Posted by Mark on September 7, 2021 at 1:25 pm

We are new to this site, so please forgive me for asking and I hope this is an allowed question. I was just reading on the site about the TSD Fuel card. I am a little leary about giving anyone my checking account information and not getting a receipt at the time I purchase fuel. Have you all had good experiences with this? Can you use a credit card or just bank account? Have you had any issues? It said 30 to 40 cent discount per gallon diesel at Love’s, wow?? Later in the description it also mentioned Pilot/Flying J. What is the discount there? Thank you.

Mark, The TSD card is an EFS driver’s fuel card. Same as many companies issue to their drivers. The company pays for the driver’s fuel purchase, not the driver.

So, when we use the card to purchase $300 of diesel, you owe the truck stop nothing, TSD owes the truck stop. And you owe TSD.

To minimize costs, the payment is via an ACH debit from a checking account you provide. I have two free credit union accounts, one for me and one for TSD.

They have issued over 54,000 cards to motorhomers and no one is having any problems with TSD. If you do not trust them with your info, they do not trust you with their card.

The TSD Open Roads app on the app store will show you all of the discounts and where they are. When you have registered your card, it will show the details of each purchase within minutes of the purchase. There is no discount at Pilot/FlyingJ.

Call them with any questions. The fuel ladies are very helpful folks and always happy to assist anyone. If in Texarkana, TX, stop by as they are on the I-30 feeder road.

This card is a serious money saver when you stop at TA/Petro truck stops and a good saver at Loves.

I agree with Rudy 100%. Rudy BTW is “the guy” who brought TSD to the Prevost Community!

I’m a retired banker and have a very good understanding of the Automated Clearing House (ACH) system. To get access to the ACH system, the companies have to go through rigorous review and due diligence; in my opinion more rigorous than if they were going to accept payment through a credit ro debit card. The bank they use actually issues them “an ACH guidance line” which is similar to a line of credit. Reviewed periodically, renewed periodically. Probably annually. Bank doeesn’t like the financial or business practices of the customer using ACH … the ACH rails are taken away.

If you receive any payments via “direct deposit” (Social Security, VA Pension, private pension, govt pension, union pension, regular distribution from your stock portfolio, etc.) or make any “direct payments” (mortgage, cell phone, installment loan, power company, cable TV, Internet service, condo fees, etc.) those are most likely done via the ACH system. So you’ve already given those folks your bank’s routing number and your checking or savings account number.

As Rudy suggested, some of the TSD Fuel Program participants have opened a special account with their bank or credit union just for the TSD Fuel Program, keep a minimal amount of money in it, and then transfer in enough money to cover their fuel purchases. Attorneys call this belts and suspenders.

You might ask, “Why can’t you use a credit or debit card for the TSD Fuel Program?” Great question. Extremely low transaction costs is a big contributing factor to the TSD pricing. The bank interchange fees for credit or debit cards typically run between 2.5% and 2.85% of the total transaction. ACH fees are around 19 cents PER transaction. The savings is huge.

Many of us are on the TSD Fuel Program and enjoy the savings.

Just to show you, a long time RV friend who is a member of this forum, fueled today — 128 gallons resulting in a savings of $65 off of posted cash price. Easy in, Easy Out and fuel at 60 gallons per minute, no cut off.

    What is not to like!

    Dick,

Can you explain how outfits benefit from having a credit card with their name on it? For example does Amazon get a portion of the fees charged by the credit card company on an Amazon Visa? Thanks, jeff

Thank you. That does make me feel better. We already have 3 different checking accounts. Probably don’t want to add another one just for fuel. May just use the one that has a smaller balance. Thanks for your input.

While not the greatest savings in the World, there was only a Love’s nearby when I needed fuel Monday. The pump read $3196 and my checking account was charged $293.83. While that’s “only” a $25.23 savings, it’s well worthwhile. I like the extra money but I also never had to leave the RV! Go outside, swipe the card at the pump, pump the fuel, drive off. I take a picture of the final total on the pump to verify my billing but otherwise it’s totally fuel and go.

I just got my card today and signed up for the app. The local T/A savings are 60+ cents/gal! Retail was a little high to begin with, but that brings it down to less than $3.

Here’s a newbie question for you guys… I was told to only fill up on the starboard side filler unless I want a diesel douche. I pulled into a Pilot that had pumps on both sides, but only had a CC reader and user interface on the port side. I couldn’t figure out how to activate the pump on the starboard side through that interface. What’s the trick?

If I remember correctly when you activate the pump on the drivers side just go around to the other side and use the pump, it will come on.

Have filled my CC many times from both sides.

There is no way to activate the pump other than the pedestal on the drivers side. Once that’s active and you remove the nozzle from the pump (use it or not) you can go to the remote pump on the passenger side and fill from there.

Seems strange that you would have to do that when the drivers side fill is right there!

What Buddy said…can fill from either or both sides…however, no matter which side I filled my CC from, the last 10-15 gallons had to almost be put in with a straw (very slowly) to prevent a messy fuel burp. Just the nature of the beast, at least it was in our case.

Is it just me or does every truck fuel stop fueling pad seam to lean to the drivers side making filling from the drivers side a up hill fill?

Level Low fixes that problem before you start fueling!
