  • Dash lights at night

Posted by Dick on November 5, 2021 at 12:41 pm

I did about five or six hours of night driving last weekend in the coach over two evenings. It reminded me of how dark the dash panel is.

Black gauge face with dark orange lettering, small fonts, probably some burned out back lighting, rocker switches hard to identify, driver/coach fan speed and temp controls impossible to identify without turning on the entry lights.

Has anyone done a major upgrade to their dash panels? I’m thinking white gauge faces with larger fonts on the gauge lettering with good night lighting. Maybe even full digital gauges. Would new gauges be compatible with the sending units or DDEC, whereever the information comes from?

Or will replacing the burned out 1999 incandescent bulbs with new but original technology bulbs solve the problems? Is there a workable LED upgrade for the lights in the dash and gauges? I expect dimming might be an issue, but that is probably replacing the dimmer.

    Dick

PS: If you have a pre-2000 XL with the original Ford Bronco headlights and haven’t upgraded to Matthew Valentine’s J.W. Speaker LED headlight system you’re really missing something. The difference is very simply STUNNING. Just simply STUNNING. Turns night into day.

Hello, Dick. Can you supply contact/web address for the Matthew Valentine’s J.W. Speaker LED headlight system?

Prior to the explosion of available LED bulbs that are able to replace the incandescents I chose to install a reasonably bright red reading light that shined down on the Prevost dash. It was very effective at making the dash readable at night.

We have 2 red lights in the front of the Prevost, one for driver and one for passenger, for lighting up the dash etc.

We have one in our airplane too for lighting up the instrument panel or map etc.

I recently discovered that my new beloved LED headlights never even get warm. So, while driving through a snow storm heading to Co. Springs last fall the headlights were completely covered with snow and no longer putting out any light at all. Not sure what to do in the future but replacing these LED’s for something else is not an option.

Do you have Matthew Valentine’s JW Speaker headlights? Or other lights.

The JW Speaker headlights have an option for heated lens. When lens temp drops to 35*F the heat automatically comes on. I think it’s a $150 option.

If you simply install an LED bulb in the existing Ford Bronco headlights, it probably won’t have the heat to melt snow or ice build up.

I don’t have either of the setups you describe. They are complete replacements with high and low beam LED lens and a round LED blinker. No heat.

Tonight I finished my LED Dash Lighting Upgrade. Will post pics once it gets dark.

These are the lights I used, .5 watts each dimmable.

Hard to get a good night shot, but you will get the idea. That is about 75% of full on.

Where did you get the dimmer from?

In the photo with the bird’s nest of wires, I see what looks like the back of a rocker switch. Is that part of the install?

In the photo of the back of the gauge it appears you trapped a washer between the two plastic nuts and then glued the washer to the back of the gauge. Is that what you did? Did you use silicon or another adhesive? Did one of the plastic nuts fit in the kit hole in the back of the gauge?

In the bird’s nest picture I see three and four wires coming out of a fastener. What is that device called? Where can it be obtained.

Great project. Great pictures! Thanks so much for sharing.

    Hi Dick, See Below:

Where did you get the dimmer from?

Mike: Amazon, Here is the link:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C4UBMY6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

In the photo with the bird’s nest of wires, I see what looks like a the back of a rocker switch. Is that part of the install?

Mike: Those are actually lights also. They were illuminating the Country Coach emblem in the center of the Dash. I am not sure if they are Country coach installed or Prevost installed but they are all over the dash Panel to illuminate Brakes, or Tag Up, or Turn Signals. You can see more of them in the earlier pictures.

In the photo of the back of the gauge it appears the trapped a washer between the two plastic nuts and then glued the washer to the back of the gauge. Is that what you did?

Mike: The Led’s are a machined aluminum 11mm threaded body, with 2 aluminum lock nuts. I took both nuts off, and slipped a standard 7/16″ id washer and locked it against the underside of the LED flange with the 2 locknuts. Adding this washer in essence gave me a large mounting surface.

Did you use silicon or another adhesive?

Mike: I used a DAP product called DynaGrip 5X Max, but any construction adhesive will work. All of those square lights are held to the back of the dash panel with some kind of black semi flexible adhesive, so i didn’t feel bad using it in my application.

Did one of the plastic nuts fit in the kit hole in the back of the gauge?

Mike: Yes, all the holes were big enough except the Turbo Boost. I had to use a dremel and open the back up enough to drop the light in and bond it in place. As you can see in the Birds nest picture, the light sockets snap into the back sides of the gauges.

The bird’s nest picture I see three and four wires coming out of a fastener. What is that device called? Where can it be obtained.

Mike: I am not sure what you are talking about, Maybe the closed end crimp connectors?

As you can see in the pictures below, I removed the existing light socket, which left a hole too big for the New LED, as It would just fall thru. So i added a washer that was larger diameter than the hole, and the used adhesive to bond it to the back of the gauge. Some of the existing light sockets used the gauge case as Ground, i didn’t care because the wires went back to a bank of terminal blocks controlled by the dimmer.

    Dick-

I’m with you on wanting to replace the dark gauges with lighter gauges.

Mike’s LED upgrade definitely brightens things up, but it would be great to have lighter gauges even during the day. I hope someone has found some new gauges that have light faces and have LED lights already built into the unit, and will post about them.

JW Speaker, great Wi. company! Did you get the heated or non- heated LED headlight upgrade?

Also did you get the units with the adjustment slots?

    Thanks!
