I’m not sure the model of the unit I now have. One of our PC sponsors installed a new roof unit last year that is so noisy, so loud, it drives me crazy. I not only hear the humming inside, but when I sit outside, you get a loud hum from the roof that is doubly disturbing. Can’t carry on a conversation or watch TV in a normal way. I complained about it when I picked up my coach and nothing was resolved. Had it back to his shop again with no cure to date. I will be going back one more time for a final fix.

Hence, test all the settings and if you’re not happy with it, have it changed right away or it will haunt you. Sorry to rant, but this noise is really annoying and I’m very upset.

Roof airs have the potential to make a very nice coach unpleasant. We never had roof airs but we spent an hour in a coach that had them and the converter was proud of them and how quiet they were. We just smiled because it was like sitting inside a drum.

I know some are very quiet, some are loud, some installations do a very nice job of isolating noise, others not so good.

My free advice is before making any decision go through as many coaches as possible with roof airs and find out which ones are quiet, which ones have the type of controls you want to stick with and which ones scream like a banshee. Based solely on our limited experiences sitting inside coaches with roof airs we know they can be acceptable regarding noise or they are intolerable. I don’t know how to separate a lousy installation that does nothing to reduce noise from a roof air putting out unacceptable noise levels, but I do know I don’t care what anyone says because the decision is too important to not do the research by myself by listening to them in operation.

I was at AAP two months ago and had 1 cruisair replaced, the other three units tested/serviced/charged and one SMX control replaced. They had me in the shop at 8:30 and out the door around 3 PM. Top notch facility and staff. There’s a nice campground about 10 miles south that I used so that I could be there first thing in the morning. Total cost was in the neighborhood of $4000.

Jimmy, venting is OK on PC. When Tom and I started this it was with the clear intent for all of us owners to help each other by sharing information and ideas. It is our collective knowledge that has great value.

My only suggestion is if you make a post and it is accurate, but you have second thoughts later do a revised explanation but let us all know what you know or have learned.

Regarding some newer Roof Air units I have heard second hand that some of the units have improved performance in terms of cooling capacity, but the downside is increased noise level. I also know some installers are left with hard decisions because not all units (such as quiet ones) may be compatible with the control systems and are stuck with trying to decide if the cost to modify the controls justifies the quieter units.

Back to Rick’s question, he has cruiseairs boys and doubt he cares much about discussing the differences between roof or cruiseair noise.

If I were in your shoes Rick, I would have the salon either fixed or replaced and just have the other 3 checked for pressures, cleaned, etc. The salon has to work the hardest because of the front cap heat.

I just had my salon replaced and there is no difference in sound. The only difference for mine is the condenser fan will shut down instantly when the unit shuts off. The old ones continue to run for a few minutes in a cooling cycle. Fred at AAP says they don’t do that anymore.

I would suggest seeing AAP, ETLC or Tradewinds to get you squared away.

I’m used to the noise. All my prevost’s have had cruise airs. I was looking to see if anyone had a good experience upgrading to a newer unit while still keeping the STX controllers and any crestron control. Based upon the conversation It looks like the best bet is to repair the existing unit.

Are they roof units or splits? Cruisair is now owned by Dometic who also sells/markets roof units.

They are Roof units, the documentation listed them as Cruiseair, but they are Coleman Polar roof units.

Rick, why don’t you call Jeff at ETLC and ask him about the newer ones that Liberty is now using. I have had roof airs, cruise airs, and now back to roof airs. The first coach 2008 Legendary was not horrible, but somewhat loud. Second coach, the 2011 Liberty had cruise airs, and the current one, 2016 Liberty has roof airs. They are quieter than the roof airs of the Legendary, and seem to be about the same as the cruise air units in the 2011. I know that Liberty does some work to the units to quiet them down, and it works.

Jeff would be able to tell you what you could keep and what would need upgrading.

Wow it took three days to figure out Rick has roof airs. The cruiseair word threw this into a tizzy.

I would bet a dollar to a donut he has 4 13,500 Coleman roof airs, no splits or combo roof and cruiseair in the basement.

There is no secret sauce on noise levels on roof airs, the older they get they will make a little more noise. Rick your bus has 10 years on it and you never put a dime into to AC’s and the previous owner probably didn’t either. Your way ahead of anybody with cruise airs.

I would have a drop in replaced and check noise levels against the rest of them. There is no upgrade except going to 15,000 Coleman unit which probably would work with your SMX controls.

Jimmy, your roof AC’s sit on 2 pieces of 3/4 inch plywood buildup and a 1.5 foam border. If the shop didn’t replace that correctly you will get more noise. Also check that your cover is secured on top.

Newer coaches have changed the air flow coming into the coach thru ceiling design which helps keep noise down.

Sorry for inserting “cruiseair” on my original post…..it’s on the marathon documentation. As stated in my original post, 4 Coleman series 9000 (delete cruiseair) 13500 btu with heat strips. I had them serviced, filters etc as well as some marginal plastic fan blades replaced in April as well as a noisy fan motor and 2 water condensation pumps, so they have been recently serviced. I was just curious if anyone has changed out all the original units and if so what did they replace them with……sorry for the confusion.
