Cruise Air Spring Tune-ups
Posted by DON on April 9, 2019 at 8:32 pmIts starting to get warm here, so I tuned-up all 3 Cruise Airs. One needed a “run” capacitor, Grainger item# 30D620,.and 2 needed a little R-22 freon. Tools I added to my HVAC collection this year: a King Valve square drive rachet, and a Ames brand (HF) dual input contact thermometer. Pressures when charged on a 83 degree day: 67/240 psi, Hi/Low king outlet differential temps 50 f.

Just juiced mine up last week. Front has worked since I replaced hoses with steel braided type from AAP a couple years ago. It’s on a swing out. Other back 2 will leak down over a month or 2 and know the king valves are leaking. Have to pull AC’s out to replace. Replaced/silver soldered king valve in front a few years ago as it’s easy to get at. Can’t replace Kingvalve stems like you can on other valves which is a pita. Funny on back 2 they will never leak down total just to where compressor won’t kick in. That wrench you have is a life saver. Keeps from rounding off square shaft on valve.

Glen, I have that on to do list. I have not “dropped the bumper yet, even to look at the units,
Question how much room do I need to swing out the front unit?
I have looked for pictures or video but no luck.

Jim if like mine, all 3 under front, behind bumper, the one that swings (front one) just past the bumper, maybe 6 or 8 inches past.

Glen, thanks, I missed your reply . I dropped the bumper and swung the one out.
It was replaced with a new one two years ago, but has a small leak, I need to add some Freon,the previous owner had Marathon add some last year just before I bought it. still cools some but could be better.
there are two behind the bumper, the other is in the rear closet.
The coils needed cleaning ,bad on the front two, going to do the other this weekend.

Did any of you guys check the air temp coming out of the registers in your coach during or after tune-ups?
I checked mine yesterday, a 90 degree Sunday.

I have no experience with Cruiseair but these seem pretty warm outflow temps to me. Can anyone chime in on something to compare with please?

I attribute the front being a bit warmer as its right at the front cap but cooling the bus overall is no problem with just 2 running. I just wanted to make sure i didn’t need some tweaking done!

Your temps sound good, but the way most of us check is to compare supply and return temps. We look for at least a 20 degree spread.
The front is going to be warm unless you have light colored shades across to block sun. In the rear past the driver’s seat lowering the blinds to the dark ones helps acting like an insulator although the dark side glass also help.

The front should be near the other two.
Putting gauges on them is the best way to know where they’re at

When I meant front is going to be warm, it is in the context of room temperature, not system temps.
Since most folks don’t have gauges the easiest way to monitor Cruise air performance is to compare supply and return temperatures, or if preferable drop the bumper or open a panel in a bay to get access and feel or measure the suction line temp. At one time we discussed it as “beer cold” so if it is what someone thinks a cold can of beer feels like the system is probably OK.
Or use gauges.

Nowhere have I seen the recommendation that condenser coils be washed. A thorough hosing of each unit’s condenser coil is likely to improve performance significantly.
All these units are sucking air from close to the ground. Depending on age and how much run time has been while parked on grass/ dirt, these condensers can be starving for air. This procedure can be as effective or more than useful as checking / adding Freon. Do this first, because then the pressure readings will be more meaningful.

Les brings up a good point, unfortunately some of the ones I’ve had would require a complete disassemble of the bay as well as the condenser itself just to be able to clean it. It’s no wonder they don’t get cleaned.

All AC evaporators and condensers, (home, car, MH, boat, aircaft, etc) need to be kept clean, one way or another, for them to operate as designed. That’s a given. I took it for granted that everyone knows this, sorry.
I try to never operate an any AC in dusty conditions.

I have a cruse air that will not come on no fan or compressor changed SMX out still not coming on I wondering if it is board I will try to trade it with one working any one have sugestion
