Cat Scale Weight
Posted by Art on May 14, 2020 at 3:17 pmWent to a Cat Scale for the 1st time today and fuel is full water tanks are close to full and here is a picture of readings and this is a XL 40 foot coach does this look about right? Steer is 13,680 Drive axle 16,900 Tag 10140 over all 40,720

Here is mine. Bus was completely empty other than full fuel and not much fresh water. Wonder why heavier other than OTR A/C. XL 40 also.

So your steer is 860 lbs heavier then mine, drive is 900 heavier then mine, and your extra weight is forcing front down pivoting on drive and lessweight on tag? Why is your front 860 lbs heavier? it has to be OTR and cruise airs?

Art, from our experience, Marathon puts cruise airs behind front bumper and generator is in bay 1 drivers side

Here is ours. two people sitting in the front seats. 2/3rds fuel, 1/2 fresh water, not much else onboard. OTR/Webasto, Genny in 4th driver side bay, which is bay closest to drive axle. Our bus has 3 8D house batts mid way between front and drive axles.

You guys should be commended for taking your coaches to a CAT scale and weighing each individual axle to determine your weights. I’ll bet that then you go to the web site for your tires to determine the proper pressures.
That’s much more prudent than asking Prevost owners on Facebook what tires pressures everyone is running.

This (and maybe all) Marathon is front axle heavy. Yep 20KW gen first bay driver’s side. 6 4D house batteries opposite passenger side. 3 CruisAirs behind front bumper.
Otherwise there was only me, nothing at all in any cabinets, fridge (off) etc.

EVERYONE (YES I AM YELLING) needs to get their coach weighed with all of the stuff they normally have on board, full fuel, full water, and empty holding tanks.
Your safety depends on doing this because unless you inflate your tires to the max pressure as listed on the sidewall you have no way of knowing you have the correct amount of air pressure in your tires.
The maximum pressure will likely prevent blowouts, but it compromises ride comfort and handling. Inflating tires to the pressure specified in the tire pressure charts not only assures protection against blowouts but it provides the best ride, handling, braking and wear.

I realize that air pressure effects ride quality and tire wear and I’ve never changed a tire due to wear. Only due to damage and time. However, the arch enemy of the tire, and probably the major factor in blow outs, is heat. Just a very few pounds in the air pressure has a big effect on the heat build up in the tire. The higher the pressure, the cooler the tire runs. Due to this, I tend to run the tire pressure near the max limit and accept the trade-off effects on wear and ride quality which I don’t really notice. If my thinking is wrong, please straighten me out. Thanks.

I agree with your thinking John, but as a resident of the NY snow belt traction is compromised with too much or too little air. We needed the most tread contact on the road to help prevent skids and provide the best traction for starting and stopping.
In a motor home we are able to do this. When I had trucks we had to inflate for the loads, but when empty it was evident the pressures greater than needed compromised handling.
As a side note however I have always added 5 PSI over the chart pressures. just to buy a little time if I did develop a slow leak.

I weighed my coach this week for the first time since I’m getting ready for a trip on new tires. I had been erring on the side of caution before, running 100/100/90. It turns out I was very over-inflated on all axles. My weight was so low that I went to a second scale to verify it.
10780 lbs (85 psi) STEER
18100 lbs (75 psi) DRIVE
7720 lbs (70 psi) TAG
36600 lbs TOTAL
I have two Cruisairs currently removed from the steering compartment and my pull out sofa is removed. I can’t wait to see how it rides at the correct pressures.

Hi Art,
Our CC 40′ weights are very close to yours. Ours would weigh a bit less now since I removed three of the 8D AGMs and replaced them with Lithium to power all the 120vac loads. We have a 17.5kw Powertech generator on the drivers side, and the remaining AGM and new Li batteries on the passenger side. Our coach uses the CC over the road AC and three roof mounted units so no basement air.

With your weight information along with correct tire air pressure, bus should be a pleasure to drive.
I’am unable to understand why so many Prevost owners resist weighing there bus ?

Deleted UserDecember 1, 2020 at 2:30 pm+1 on Jon’s first post. You’re just kidding yourself if you’re weighing coach other than loaded. My 40′ non-OTR Marathon weighed in at about 45K; my 45′ Liberty is about 49K.

While weighing your coach is important, it’s more important to weigh each wheel position. If your axle weight is 18000#, it’s quite possible that that’s 8500 and 9500 if you weighed each wheel. So the proper inflation is for 9500 and not 9000 that you would get by simply dividing the total weight by 2. You would never inflate each tire based upon its individual weight but rather you inflate both tires based upon the heavy tire weight.
Weighing and adjusting is better than nothing but it can lead to an incorrect inflation if one side of the coach is heavier than the other (and it almost always is).
I also add 5# to the Michelin chart just because!
