  • Black Soot

Posted by Art on March 23, 2017 at 9:48 am

I haven’t had time to work on gen yet, But it blows out black soot out exhaust pipe, I can see a couple of projects I need to do to Gen , one is replace insulation in compartment and exhaust pipe is not round it is narrowned down some and it has a long run,it comes out in front of rear tire I would like to shorten run and bring it out behind DS front tire. I’m not sure of the black soot maybe the muffler needs a clean out when I change dirrection of exhaust pipe
Gen Is a Power Tech 17.5 KW with a 4 cylinder turbo charged Kubota engine.

We numbered about 7 or 8 coaches at the last Lakeland Autofest that were parked where we could run our generators.

If I remember correctly about half of us put a sooty dark spot on the grass and the other half did not. If you find why almost identical generators were exhibiting different exhaust signatures let us know.

Out of the 3 coaches that I have owned with Kohler generators this one puts out soot and the other 2 did not, tell me why.

When cold, a bit of smoke at startup is normal. It should clear up in a couple of minutes.

If black smoke continues under load when warm, it is not getting enough air for the amount of fuel injected. I’d check the air filter for cleanliness and the turbo for proper operation.

If turbo and filter are fine, check for obstuctions in air supply to generator compartment. Our coach has a supply air fan to the compartment. That fan needs to run for both cooling and proper air supply.

If you checked all that and it still smokes (black), have the injectors tested for spray pattern and/or dribbling.

I know this is anecdotal and Jon will poo-poo me….but once I started using Rick Mays Snake Oil(RV1)….no soot from Gen or Wabasto. Geo.

I don’t have to disagree. Tom will. He has been using the additive and his area near the exhaust was black. He said mine was not black because my exhaust pipe goes straight out, but a couple of other coaches with their pipe pointing straight out also were black. His generator wasn’t running right either and if he loaded it up it ran rough so his might have issues.

BTW, I did use the additive for a year and could not say I saw a difference in my generator exhaust because it never blackened the ground around it.

Prior to the trip I did a full service on my generator because it was due and it included a new air filter.

I love the snake oil, my gen has an issue that is not related to fuel condition. Jon’s Liberty has the standard Liberty generator anti smoke framulator regeneration exhaust devise, commonly referred to as FRED. Not the 3 green type.

Next we will be measuring the length of exhaust pipes.

Jon, are you wondering, like I am, how Tom seems to know so much about our anatomy?

Does anyone remember when PC was a family oriented web site?

Larry started this downward spiral. Tom just added a little speed to it.
