Anyone know where to get this switch?
Posted by Harry on September 25, 2019 at 3:57 pmHi guys, The light on my generator switch is out and I’d like to replace it. The switch works and starts the generator, it’s just that the lights out. I called Prevost parts and they have a switch but it has six wires and mine has five.
I could just leave it alone because the switch works but if can get the right switch I’d like to replace it. Any thoughts where I can get one?

Hi Chad, I didn’t see anything on the switch to indicate it was snapped off or extra wires indicating that possibly. Prevost parts was unsure and asked me to check the number of connections because they felt there was a good chance they wouldn’t match up.

The light bulbs for the switch can be changed and Prevost sells the bulbs
Ohm out the tabs and see what ones are open and closed circuits in the switch positions and then just get a switch with those switch characteristics. It doesn’t matter if the switch has 5 or 6 tabs as long as five work as needed.

Hi Jon, Asking if I could replace the light was my first question and John at Prevost Parts said no. He didn’t have the switch there and he couldn’t find a part number. He found the one with six connections in another office. With what you said I’ll order it and see if I can make it work? It’s $260 so I can go without eating a couple days!

See if one of these would fit. You just need to know if either side is a momentary contact and which side gets the light. The linked document has the switch dimensions.

Figure out the model number for the configuration you need, then google that to see who carries it.

This looks like a switch provided by the converter, I’m not surprised that Prevost doesn’t have it. I think any 2 way rocker with a light would work.

With all respect to the fine folks at Prevost that do offer correct answers and good advice, I verify what I am told because I have been misinformed enough to be a little cynical.
Check yourself to see if the bulb is removeable. I have replaced a lot of switch bulbs on my coaches.

Hi guys, If there is a way to get to the bulb I didn’t see it. However, I did not take the switch off the plate. I went ahead and ordered the switch from Prevost. After I take the switch off the plate to install the new one I’ll look more closely to see if the bulb is replaceable. If it is great, nothing wrong with having an extra switch when the bus has four of them.
My thanks for all your help as always,
Harry

My SWAG is 2 terminals are used for the indicator light and the other 3 are for starting and stopping the generator. 1 stop, one start and one common. SPDT momentary center off.

By the way, I took a closer look at one of the pictures and you can see “Carling” on the side of the switch. I bet you can find a direct replacement if the switch from Prevost doesn’t work out.

FWIW, those switches were installed by Beaver, not Prevost.

They have some old Beaver stock. Good luck

When I first contacted Prevost I thought that the dash was stock Prevost and found out of course that I was wrong again. Thanks for all the help and the link to the Beaver stock. I have no doubt that will come in handy!
And Chad, thanks for the mention of “Carling” I missed that.
Thanks again,
Harry

Here’s the switch I just received from Prevost. It doesn’t look like it will work and you’ll notice the red/orange light cover is not on it.

That switch will work. The top 2 terminals are for the light. Use one side of the switch the center terminal is common the outside ones are the for the other 2 wires. Is this switch a momentary switch? If the side in use fails you have a spare on the other side…
