  • Need Advice From The WIse

Posted by Clifford on August 14, 2013 at 12:12 am

Here it is I have found 2 new buses 1 is a 2008 and the other is 2009 0 miles never titled how much would be a good offer is my question both have 2 Prevost slides.

Speaking with the sellers they think never being used both would still have all the warranties I doubt that will happen so should I treat these like a used coach or a semi new coach

Both are asking close to new prices(not retail prices) but will bargain to move the units the warranty issue is my hangup DD says they will honor part of it not all,Prevost will honor theirs so they say then there are no conveters to honor the conversion part for warranty work I know there will be no warranty on batteries, paint, plumbing, tires and the electrial

How would you guys approach this deal ? we really like the 2008 but it is a new 5 year old coach how do you put a value on something like that

    thanks

It’s a low mileage 2008 and that’s how it should be priced. Some engine manufactures will treat an engine as new for warranty purpuses to the first buyer up to 3 years after manufacturer’s build date or date of delivery to the builder.

    Clifford,

I’m assuming Detroit will not honor the engine warranty, or if they do it will only be for a short period of time. I heard but cannot verify they are limiting it to 5 years.

From my perspective the coaches are worth what any 2008 or 2009 might be worth with a small adjustment for mileage. If you were to pay anywhere near a new price and wanted to sell in a relatively short period of time you would seen instant depreciation of 5 years. There is no way to erase that cost unless the seller eats it.

    +1 on Jon’s remarks.

Another factor to be considered (which has also been mentioned on this site frequently) is that many systems on our coaches age without regard to mileage and some systems actually do better with some use.

When I was young and stupid, I bought a large boat with twin 625hp 6V92s. The boat had been used as a demo for 2 years and had already 1000(!) hours on the engines having gone from the West Coast to the East Coast and back.

Just before I bought it, one engine dropped a valve coming up the coast as none of the dealers seemed to have done any maintenance or oil changes. They repaired the engine and I insisted on a letter from Detroit that they would honor the new engine warranty. They did. Two years later at 1500hours the other engine showed signs of weak compression and Detroit paid for an inframe overhaul (6 kits) with me picking up some ancillary costs. Kept that boat for 10 years. Engines were fine as long as you planned on an inframe every 1500 hours or so. Just too much horsepower out of a small engine.

In short, unless the rules have changed significantly, you should get new engine warranty if you are the first owner.

We have what is essentially a new 2012 Bruce Prevost XLII2S for sale. The coach has been registered in Canada, and was built on a new 2007 shell. This coach has 6,000 miles, and has a document from Detroit Diesel reflecting a warranty start date of 2/12. We have priced this coach @ $795K, even though we have receipts showing that the owner spent close to $1,400,000 building the coach. We based our pricing on, as John had indicated, what a typical 2008 XLII2S would be priced at with a reasonable premium added for the warranty, low mileage, and the fact that all the components in the coach are brand new with their respective individual warranties. This coach has had service already even with the low mileage. That is something you would want to look for even on what are very low mileage “new” shells, because of the time.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t that Bruce coach one that Legendary started, and then it went to Canada and was finished much, much later? I was told that there were two shells that were in various states of construction that went to Canada when Legendary went out of business. It has much of the same electronics and layout as the Legendary product does.

It seems to be somewhat funny to say it is a 2012 when it is on a 2007 chassis………

It very well could be. The coach was completed by Bruce Coach in 2011, and they issued a Manufactures Statement of Origin with it designated as a 2012. While that is the right way of doing it, as they are the final manufacturer, and Prevost provided the shell as an incomplete vehicle, we disclose the age of the shell in all of our marketing so as to not mislead anyone. The coach is very nice, and is finished with beautiful stained Maple cabinetry. We have receipts for over $1.3M paid by the coach owner. The systems are similar to Legendary, but it has some things that are quite a bit different as well. We believe the coach can be a great buy for the right person. There are some advantages to the older shell, as it does not have the catalytic or roof exhaust. I have liked the cabinetry work that Bruce Coach does, I have seen about 4 in person, this is the first one we have had for sale. I do not have any problems with Legendary Coaches. Some sold for some very low prices when they closed shop, which is unfortunate (except for the folks that got a great deal!). That has kept the prices of the coaches lower than they probably should be. The real key with any coach, is to get one that has been cared for, and that you love. We get customers sometimes that are more interested in buying the deal, instead of the coach. I tell people, and I believe this in my heart, you are better off to over pay for the right coach than to steal the wrong one.

I have no issue with Legendary (obviously), or someone finishing up where they left off. As long as everyone knows the shell build dates and that Bruce did they paperwork as a 2012, then there should not be any issues. It should be a fairly good coach for someone who wants something unused, but at a better price. Do you have any idea how Prevost will treat this as far as warranty goes, and more importantly, if it has any panel delam issues that will need work..how do they treat a coach shell this old?

I was told that both of the shells had been started, but maybe the person who told me that was incorrect. There is so much similarity between them from the pictures, it makes me think that they must have been started, or lots of stuff must have been shipped with them.

I do like the woodwork though…..looks very nice.
