Need Advice cooler hose I am on I-77
Hear a shrill sound when I accelerate and some black smoke, Called PASS and they think it is a cooler hose, want me to go to greensboro, Detroit facility and not climb Fancy Gap siad it could blow out and I would lose power, Has any one had this happen do I just baby it to greensboro or do I try to find the hose and “ducttape it”? I am about 50mi to greensboro, any help appreciated Gary

Have you looked at the hoses going to the cooler? Could be a loose or broken clamp. If the hose is split open that would be another story. I would guess that if you put enough wraps of duct tape around the hose to seal a split it might hold for 50 miles.
Need to find the problem area 1st, then figuire a way to fix it.
hate to say it, but the noise and black smoke may be a turbo going bad, hope not.

By cooler hose I am guessing they are talking about the rubber hose joints from the turbo charger to the charge air cooler and then at the charge air cooler to the intake.
If you can get to the hoses when the engine cools a little I suspect there is a tear or hole in one of them. To get you safely back on the road there is a 3M product which is a tape that has high temp resistance and which bonds to itself. A NAPA store or most auto parts stores likely carry that tape. Wrap that around the tear or hole. (The rear joint is a reach but if the engine is cool enough you can get to it with long arms) I would wrap it tight a couple of times. I would also pick up a few large hose clamps and put a clamp or two over the tape to further hold it.
That should get you up the hills and to a convenient Detroit dealer.
I am not suggesting anything other than a high temp tape, like duct tape because the discharge air from the turbo is HOT.

Thanks all, I baby footed it to Greens boro trying to keep pressure below 15 It was one of the boots that connect the piping to turbo, repair facility I would highly reccomend ” Clarke Power and equipment” Used to be Covington Desiel PASS will tell you covington guess it is not updated in their files Ph 336-292-9240. speak with Rich. Something to think about , The Prevost hoses are a little different than most I was lucky one of the mechanics had one in his toolbox, so I did not have to wait for one to be ordered, May want to consider carrying a spare with clamps, Rich said some of the bus companies change them out every 7-8 years, 6 or seven of them at 300 each getting to them is the trick, they took the panel out from the wheel well to get to mine drivers side. I don’t know about yours, but most CAC connecting hoses have a vibration damper that also takes care of slight alignment mismatches. At $30 each I’m guessing these are just straight hoses. I have 3 different ones that I carry as spares also I think that the clamps should be carried as spares as they are unique,I had a split one 3-4 years ago and could make 11 PSI of boost,thankfully it happened on the east side of Asheville,Covington in Greensboro fixed mine also.

I had a failure of the hose recently and (formerly Covington) now Clark Diesel of Kingsport, Tn perform the repair. I must have lucked up and found them on sale – he had several on display for 17.95 each and only charged me for the part and put it on. Quick and Hot!!! But I have spent money as we used say “big Lew Bucks” with these guys before. Very NIce Folks!!
But thanks to Gil’s post I see there are two different colors based on temperature needs. I believe I have the blue one when maybe a 500 degree should have been installed. Anyone had experience with blue hose connections only. So far So good .
