  • Stupid Bus Things I Have Done That Are Funny Now

Posted by Ken on April 24, 2014 at 11:03 am

I really hope this won’t be a thread with one post, but I’ll
    start it.

I was hooking my shore cord to the bus a few days ago when I
remembered all the stupid things I’ve done that were related to a shore cord over
    the last 20 years.

Drove off with it still hooked up.

Forgot it and left it at home.

Ran over it with my mower.

Ran over it again with my mower, this time it only cut the
neutral and ground. Shocked the crap out of me when I tried to open the door
and the added bonus was that it fried any 110v item that was on.

I don’t know of any other dumb thing I could have done to a shore
cord. This all happen early in my bus ownership years. I had a good chuckle
when I thought back on it, wasn’t funny at the time.

Does dragging a Hummer for 1/4 mile with the brakes locked count as a stupid bus thing?

Does shutting down two lanes of a 4 lane highway (because I couldn’t complete a U turn with the toad on back) count?

Those that do not post their stupid bus tricks either just got the bus and haven’t had a chance to earn their stripes, or they just don’t want to admit in public they have also done stupid bus things.

Probably the stupidest bus thing I have done was buy a bus in the first place.

But the bus sure has brought a lot of laughs to me and my family since then!

    Davy,

Nobody has ever been able to justify buying our coaches, but then again almost all of us would do it over again.

How about finding out how much my butt swings when pulling away from a curb by seeing a geyser where a fire hydrant used to be (on the street in front of the DMV after registring my first bus)? How about, after learning that lesson, looking for obstacles on the ground only, and not noticing a tree branch impinging on my butt swing space at 11.5 feet up?

For a while I carried a small motorcycle on bumper rack, (that
was my towed). Traveling down a narrow two lane road an oncoming automobile flashed
his lights I looked in mirror as he passed by and saw my bike was be being partly
dragged. The inside strap had come loose, it flipped over and the handlebar
was dragging on the pavement. I panicked, quickly found the widest place in the
road, pulled over ran around, gabbed the handle bar and picked it up. Guess which side of the
handle bar I picked up. That’s right, the red hot side that was dragging on the
pavement. The rest of the drive was
spent with ice cubes wrapped in a towel around the palm of my hand. It helped
the pain some, but when I got to the campground I took the ice cubes put ’em in
cup, poured a lot of tequila in the cup and that really helped.

I vaguely recall leaving a truck stop at zero dark thirty one morning and getting on 95 south, about twenty minutes later my cousin who was running behind us called with the good news that sparks were coming out from underneath the toad. at the next exit we pulled off and soon discovered that someone who should have been paying a little more attention didnt turn the ignition switch far enough to unlock the wheel and the wheel was turned. The sparks underneath were from the cords in the tire after all the tread was worn off. needless to say I still hear comments from the better half about checking things alittle more carefully . Life sure gets interesting sometimes.

We have been lucky with the bus so far but have had our fair share of stupid boat and plane tricks.

One evening we entered a picturesque remote anchorage in British Columbia, managed to set the anchor against the side of the underwater fjord and held it with a stern tie. The usual routine up north. Settling in for happy hour I lit the gas grill and got distracted below. A few minutes later I hear a loud boom and my wife yelling FIRE! Not something you ever want to hear especially out in the boonies. I had left the gas lighter under the grill and it exploded/burst into flames. There were two other boats in the anchorage and I’m sure they still talk about the woman jumping into the cold water with a burning lighter. There was no damage to the boat (or the wife) just to my ego.

Left one bright sunny day from home in GA heading to Myrtle Beach. Got late in the day in figured I would just stay at the KOA instead of heading all the way to the beach, we were a day early. Got out at the campground to check in and went back to unhook the toad, only to find both front tires to the cords, but still holding air. Damn, I didn’t put the switch in the right spot and the steering was locked.

Got the bus into the site and parked beside a real nice Liberty. Wonder who that is I think and while I’m parking the toad, guess who comes out of the bus? Yep, my worst nightmare, JON. Grinning like a dog, camera in hand. It was his first trip out with the new bus and I never even saw the black Hummer, that would have tipped me off.

    Let the fun begin..

I’ve done the steering wheel lock thing too. One of the first trips out
in the Prevost I was towing my Toyota truck, just had installed shiny
new wheels and new tires. On the way back home someone passed me and was
waving and pointing back at my truck. I stopped at the next available
wide place, I was thinking, what could possibly be wrong, I didn’t see
anything at first and then a faint black power down the left side of the
truck gave it away, The left front tire was into the metal. A few more
miles and I would have been on the rim. This was in the day time, I
don’t what the people saw who pointed it out, but I’m glad they did. The
strange thing is that the right side tire was not damaged.

    All,

We do not have a bus at this time, but did stupid stuff in a Class A. We purchased a 03 Country Coach Intrique and the day before or maiden trip we went to the storage unit to check over the coach. Pulled it out of the storage unit and forgot to unhook the 50 amp cord. Tore the 50 amp cord out of the coach.Of course this was on 4th of July weekend. Canceled the trip and on Monday made an appoinment to take the coach and get repaired. As I was leaving the storage facility I hit the fence and tore a two foot gash in the fiber glass. The fiber glass repair plus paint was more than the 50 amp cord repair.

Had a blow on the passenger side rear tire on the tow. When the tire blew it took out the shock and part of the plastic fender. A volunteer fireman finally got my attention and helped with the repairs. His brother was the sheriff of the next town and he had already called him to let him know we where headed his direction and we where in distress. The sheriff told his brother that he had deputies looking for us. Situation ended well, spend the better part of the next day having Sears replace/repair the shock and tire.

People we know ask about our rv experiences and I tell them to rent the Robin Williams movie RV. I then tell them that I have done about all of those things except drive into the lake. The only reason we have not driven into lake is because we have not camped near to water.

I had a 2000 Mountain Aire which in Oct of 2011 I tore all the flooring out and replaced with new tile, tore out and completely rebuilt the overhead TV and cabinetry including a new 42″ flat screen, built a outside entertainment center and 6 new Michelins. I was happy! For about 2 months till I went to the Tampa show and traded for a 2011 Mountain Aire. Now that was stupid!

In my airplane days I landed a Piper Archer on the Interstate between Tulsa and Oklahoma City, at 5pm, during rush hour, with the traffic. No damage, no injuries, no ticket, no FFA sanctions.

I was flying out of La Crosse, WI. When I arrived back at the FBO the next day, a newspaper picture of the FBO’s airplane sitting on the shoulder perpendicular to the highway had been posted on the bulletin board with the N-number circled.
