  • Welding on tailpipe

Posted by Jerry on April 12, 2014 at 7:55 pm

I noticed today that my stainless tailpipe tip has broken loose at the weld. Is it really necessary to disconnect all grounds to weld the crack on the tailpipe , since it’s fairly small, and wouldn’t require much heat?

    Whats your thoughts?

It is unless you want to risk frying the ECM for the engine, and the one for the tranny. Your choice.

Never ever weld without disconnecting all the sensitive electronics because the time saved is never going to compensate for the cost of the potential damage.

Prevost has a specific procedure for things to disconnect in the shop manual for your coach. I would also check with the converter because newer coaches have also have a lot of potential for damage.

On a previous coach I used a band clamp

to go around the pipe and then drilled a hole in the hanger so one of the bolts of the clamp could be attached to the hanger. It was still working well when I sold the coach some years later.
