Coolant hose leak
Hi PC, I hope this explanation is not too convoluted
I have a slow coolant leak in what I believe is a 2 and 5/8 inch hose that I need to replace. The hose is on piping that comes from the rear side of the transmission cooler then heads up and bends back towards the bottom side of the engine connecting close to where the housing for the oil filters are. The coolant hose itself is only about 4 inches long. There is a petcock ball valve by the front part of the hose close to that housing.I can’t see any shut-off valves to any of the connecting pipes that would shut off the coolant to that section of piping where the hose is leaking.I’m wondering how much coolant will be released when I remove the hose? Will I lose all the coolant in the system or will it just be localized to that area of the piping? The coolant is only a year old so I’d like to reuse what drains out if that’s possible.Thank you for your help. Fred -

There is no shut off for that hose so your only choice is to catch and reuse coolant which has to be drained to replace the hose.

Ok thanks, Jon. I’ll need to get another tub ready to catch whatever drains. I’m starting down the long road of hose replacement! It’s incredible how many hoses there are on a SS 60!

I just went through that with my coach and I timed to to coincide with a coolant change. Most were OK but one hose had a bad spot near the clamp so staying ahead of the game turns out to be good preventive maintenance.

Agreed. Air, fuel, coolant hoses are everywhere and they all need attention. Then there are the unexpected hose issues. I was driving in TX by Van Horn and I noticed a coolant smell and then saw my gauge moving up and then a cloud of mist coming from the rear of the bus. I pulled over and there was a huge coolant leak coming from the transmission cooler area. The aft hose on the transmission cooler was split down the middle! At the time I thought it was just a bad hose giving out. I lost 12 gallons of coolant. I called for help, and we replaced the hose and the coolant, and off I went with only a 4 hr delay. When I got back home I was replacing the coolant filter and happened to look at the backside of the bumper and inside of it stuck to the back of the bumper was a spike about 6 or 7 inches long made out of what looked like thick brass material with a dull grey color to it. The spike had notches on it so it may have been a dipstick for something on a truck or maybe some heavy equipment of some sort. I really try hard never to run anything over on the road but this metal dipstick was basically the same color as the road so very hard to see. It may have been a dipstick but its afterlife was a hell of a shearing knife! I was lucky the damage was repairable on the side of the road but beware of road hazards, some could be the same color as the road you’re on.
