I just signed back up for a Good Sam membership. I hadn’t been a member for 3 or 4 years. I’m joining only because of the Pilot/Flying J RV card. It claims that you can just go through the truck lanes and not have to go inside and prepay for fuel. Just swipe your card, enter a code and they debit your bank account each month. It will always give me the cash price along with a 6 cent/gallon discount. If I become a life member, it’s 8 cents.

Do any of you guys have this card and is it what they say? any GOTCHA’s involved.

Regarding the Pilot / Flying J card, the way it works is you are signing up for a Pilot / Flying J credit card and you have a monthly limit of $1000 unless you go for automatic withdrawal from your checking account in which case the limit is $2500.

I’m awaiting mine. However for years I had always paid cash, but when it got to be a hassle to pay cash (pull up to pump, go inside wait in line and give them $XXXX cash, go out and pump fuel, go back inside and wait in line to get your change and receipt) I fought with them and finally got corporate Pilot to give me a commercial account card which gave me cash price at the pump and I would pay an emailed bill once a month. Since the RV card gives a discount I am now going to use that. The pump starts with the card and you never have to leave the pump. The card turns it on, you fill the bus and you drive away. You do need to write down what you pumped and the dollars of the sale because the pump will not kickout a receipt.

It is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. No waiting in line, you get a discount, and the price you pay is likely lower than any other diesel price unless you get a truck stop with really discounted prices.

While paying with the Flying J card, yes you do it “all” at the pump. That said, Jon is right in getting the figures from what you pumped, either by copying them down yourself or maybe getting a copy of the transaction from the Fuel Desk. That said, sort of takes away from doing it all at the pump. I have a credit card that gives me back $5 per dollar on all fuel, BUT it must be swiped at the pump to make sure I am not buying 3-$500 worth of candy bars instead of fuel. This presents a problem as most truck stops do not allow a credit card to do this. SO, maybe Flying J has hit upon a way to get some discount on our fuel.

I keep detailed records when I pump, but I also log the same data in a book I have carried since I put the first mile on our first bus. I get a bill from Pilot every month (same card works for auto gas) and they have never disagreed with my records. I won’t waste the time going inside to the fuel desk.

Used mine for the first time Sunday. It works just as described and I did walk in and get a receipt. At least I did not have to go in twice and let them hold my credit card. When you consider the savings is off the cash price it is not a bad deal considering it is no cost to me. I did have to choose the option for tractor fuel as opposed to reefer fuel.

I’ve been using the Frequent Fuel card and all that gets me is pump start. Still have to go in, get in line to pay.

Thanks for the info, I’ll be signing up for one of these cards.

I just signed up for the 3 year roadside assistance at Good Sam for 239.85 then signed up for a Lifetime Membership at Good Sam for 1990 so I could get the 8 cents off for diesel. Hope it works.

I usually fuel up while Janice goes inside the truck stop office.

From the amount of time she’s gone, I think they must hold her as collateral until the payment clears…

    Paul,

It takes awhile because Janice is raking them over the coals for high fuel prices!

Just stopped outside Amarillo and could not read the pump. Went inside and they said no, it is not a credit card and I could not charge with it. After raising a little ruckus they called someone and got it straight. They had never seen one!!

I typed out a big, long reply to this the other day, but it wouldn’t post from my iPhone. Argh!

We are done with Flying J. They can take a flying leap!

Needing fuel on our way to the Keys we looked for one to use our card. Get there after making a big U-turn onto a side road, swipe, get message for tractor or reefer fuel. Never saw that before, so my wife goes in. Cashier tells her either is fine, swipes her cards. I fill up, she signs, price is $3 less than the Credit price. Cashier argues that that’s what it always is (wrong) so we leave, as it is late and there is no one else to talk to.

1 mile down the road is diesel $.20 cents cheaper than FJ’s CASH price!

Called the manager a couple times over the next couple days, then corporate. We eventually got our $7 credit, but at the expense of $500 of our time!

Next time I will save my time and some money and look at whoever else is close by.

    Hey Karl,

sorry to hear about your Flying J ” foo pa”. As you travel closer to Key West you will forget about Flying what’s there name….right.

Based on all the problems with truck stops around the country we have changed how we buy bus fuel. Cash…

I usually over pay, go back inside get the change and off we go. No worry about credit card #’s and all that can take place when some….. dirt bag…… gets your number. Maybe a little inconvience but on the other hand piece of mind.

One more point on buying fuel at the truck stops Flying J, Pilot, Loves, we have a reasonable chance of getting fresh

    diesel fuel.

Have a great time in the the Keys…one of our favorite places.
