  • Engine Turbo S-60

    A friend took his bus into Detroit Diesel for a off and on check engine dash light Mileage about 90K S-60 DDec IV

    EGR valve problem as determined by DD. Estimated repair around $1500 using new not rebuilt EGR valve.

    The picture below shows what was found when turbo air pipe was removed. So much for the above estimate.

    Question is….what caused this turbo fin damage ?

    Its pictures and stories like this that have caused me to discourage my wife from joining the PC Forum and have keep me from sharing my PC Forum credentials with her. In spite of that, everytime she hears a click or squeak or groan from the coach that doesn’t seem “right” to her, she continues to say “shouldn’t you call Jeff and ask him about it?” Which of course 99% of the time I don’t do.

    I hope there is a good outcome to this situation. Keep us posted.

    Something that should never have been in the air intake not only came in contact with the turbo, it ended up rattling around in there.

    That is the kind of damage that has no limits because the next thing in line after the pieces of metal start to come apart is the engine intake manifold. From there it can damage valves and valve seats, score cylinder walls, break rings and generally convert an engine into a boat anchor.

    It could have been a fastener that got into the inlet to the turbo, a stone that got past the air filter, maybe a piece of the wire mesh that supports the air filter paper element or maybe part of a diamond shipment being smuggled in the coach into the US.

    Expensive damage but it looks like the tip of the iceberg.

    I’ve been told what ” might ” of been through the turbo. Of course it’s just a guess.

    Owner say’s he had normal boost and never experienced anything to tip him off of an turbo issue.

    Let’s wait and see what the arm chair tech’s on PC come up with.

    Whatever it was there appears no question that it was a size and shape that wasn’t easily going to pass the blades because it sat there for a while getting beat up by the blades and in turn beating up the blades. The turbo is spinning at tens of thousands of RPM and as both were chewing each other up small pieces of metal were coming from the blades and probably the foreign object and it is anyone’s guess what was happening inside the engines’s cylinders as they were being fed this material we make a strong effort to keep from our engines.

    WAG… Filter Minder failed or someone added one to the intake and metal shavings from the drilled install went to the turbo.

    I once found an extra washer for the wing nut that holds the filter in the housing. It was taped on the back of the filter like the nut sometimes is. It was just the washer, no extra nut. Not sure that is what caused this though…I would think it would be worse. I have seen all kinds of stuff that is not supposed to be in the intake. Rags from previous work, paper sucked in somehow, and salt residue from winter driving. None of it is good for the engine.

    I wonder if they checked out the CAC to see if it had junk in it that went through the turbo?

    Looking at the size of the pieces chewed from the turbo blades I suspect the wish would be the parts and pieces got intercepted by the CAC.

    My guess is that they were small enough to be carried right through the CAC.

    Keep this in mind………we likely flow somewhere between 150 and 200 POUNDS of air through our engines per hour. Once something gets into that air flow it is moving at a high rate of speed so while it might bounce around a little as it reaches the CAC whatever is being carried in that air flow is likely going to pass through especially since it appears the metal filings and shavings that got chewed up un the turbo were fairly small.

    I’d take a hard look at the air filter and the air filter housing. How many miles on the filter?

    I am not nearly as smart as all you guys. But while on my big 15 month trip. We had issues in Kamloops and Peter suggested I go to a shop there. They found that the filler tube for the transmission had rubbed a hole in the turbo intake and tech indicated if I hadn’t found it we would have likely “dusted” the engine as we entered Alaska. I am sure they have already checked it but make sure all the intake pipes look good. ours had a small but growing hole wore right thru the aluminimum pipe… They fixed it at a local shop and all has been good since…

    i can check my service log when I’m am back in the office tomorrow but I would guess around 80k. Shop indicated they had seen it before everything just crammed in there pretty tight. They modified the filler tub holder to create more space. As a result I now pay at lot closer attention to details back there especially in areas where things are really close cac hoses are very close to other possible rub points as well
