King Size Bed
Hello,
I have been looking at several used Prevost coaches. Each one I viewed has a queen bed. Has anyone
changed out or modified the coach to have a king size bed? I would like to purchase a Prevost. However, the king bed for my size is a necessity. Thank you for your help.

Welcome to PC. To change out a bed is a serious undertaking, depending on the vintage and layout of the coach. If you need a king it is likely to be a “California King” because a full king will take up a lot of space. The queen beds aren’t even a real queen.
If the lack of a king is a deal breaker then your first step is to figure out in the following order where to focus your search. Start with a budget. If your budget is in seven figures you don’t have to worry because you can probably get one built with a king, or you can get a great coach and have it modified for a king. But if your budget is low six figures you may have to buy a relatively inexpensive coach and then spend a five figure sum to modify it for a king. If you have the budget for a slide coach then you may find one such as ours which has a “king”. Actually our king is 72 wide by 78 long and is closer to a “California King”.
As a potential buyer you need a list of wants and needs anyway so starting with your budget create a list of wants and needs placing the items on the list in the order of importance because it is unlikely you will ever get everything you would like. All of our coaches are very good, better than any plastic coach out there, but due to limited space we all have compromises. Your list is literally going to guide you towards the coaches that meet your needs and you may rule out a lot of what’s on the market. But you will be able to very efficiently focus on the coach you want.

I’ve seen Kings in XL’s and XL2’s like Jon’s. If it’s been converted from a queen, you will likely lose the nightstands because of the width. They are out there, just takes some digging.

Thank you for the guidance. I think it is the best way to start. My only needs at the moment areas many slides as my wallet can tolerate and a king size bed or something close. I think I can change
anything else from there. However, it may not pay me to go the extreme makeover route.
I do like projects 🙂 I will be fulltime in this coach and let’s face it Prevost is a longtime sturdy coach.
that holds its value better than any other. I have shopped for RVs for 12 years. Bought my dream fifth wheel.
Then after 1 year I am on the market for a motorhome. After looking at seemingly every motor home on the market across various states and RV shows with factory reps. I have come to the conclusion a Prevost will be in my near future. The only other coach that seems to come close is a Newell.
Other than Dallas and Florida. Where are some good places to shop for a Prevost? My home base is Houston
for now.

Free advice (worth every cent you pay for it). Your happiness with the outcome of a search for a coach is going to be directly related to how much homework you do. Over the years on various forums we have heard from new owners that bought their coaches sight unseen on the internet, to owners that were highly detailed and who looked at many coaches, asked a bunch of questions and held out for the coach that best met their needs.
And trust me, even though all our conversions share a Prevost chassis every converter has their own way of doing things, how they set up the systems, how they set up the chassis etc. The differences are subtle but based on how you use the coach make a huge difference. For example, I am a clear advocate of Prevost over the road air and heating systems. But that is because of how my wife and I use our coach. If we lived in it full time, and stayed in one spot for long periods spending little time on the road I would likely not put that at the top of my list. An owner who likes to dry camp a lot in primitive areas like Quartzite would likely look for a coach with an abundance of battery power. Someone moving almost daily, or certainly quite often might choose to not have slides. Whatever your wants and needs are they will be your wants and needs, but if you don’t give a lot of thought to how you will use your coach your wish list may not accurately reflect what it really should be.
Keep in mind one thing that separates a Newell from a Prevost conversion. A Newell is built from the ground up as a motorhome. Ignore the comments that a Newell is a coach and a Prevost is a bus because that is just meaningless babble. A Newell is a high quality motorhome, but a Prevost conversion is a commercial quality chassis that has been converted into a motorhome. The distinction is while a Newell is built with quality components in its running gear and can be expected to have a durable quality, a Prevost is truly a commercial vehicle that has been tested and improved over many years and probably billions of miles. I can say without contradiction Prevost coaches drive and track down the highway with none of the characteristics of motorhomes that require constant corrections that tend to wear a driver out.

I have seen some Featherlite Vantari coaches from around 2003 or so that had king beds.

You can have any size bed in any coach. In some depending on the floor plan you will not be able to walk around the bed, but instead will have to climb over it. A coach has only a certain number of square feet and if you wish to change an RV queen for a king the room previously used to get around the bed will be gone.
If your budget allows some later model coaches with slides have a California King which is actually a misnomer because it is bigger than the queen beds, but not quite a king.
Again, on any coach you can stick in whatever size mattress or bed you want but you are going to give up something.

We have an 01 Vantare, Double slide. It has a King Bed. On one side, there is no night stand.
That is one of the main reasons we bought this coach. We previously had another Vantare with the same floor plan, with a Queen bed, the only difference is no night stand on one side…(MY SIDE OF COURSE)

I just had a custom mattress made for our coach. These people will make any kind any size and are wonderful to deal with. You may be ok with the king width and just not so tall and have room to walk around bed at the foot end. Fox Mattress in Daytona Beach Florida. (386) 677-3752 speak with Chelsia. Mine was 67in X77in $3,0000 took one week for them to make. Millinium coach and Donnie Meyers both of Sanford Florida use these people.

Many Vantares have what’s called a super slide in the back and those all have the king size bed with room to spare.. very very nice… huge bedroom. They may have started it in about 2004 I think.
A California King is 5’5″ wide a King is 6′ and a Queen in 5′ we had a California King in a coach and it didn’t feel any bigger than a Queen to us just 3″ on each side…. but that may mean a lot to some people. Big difference in a King and a Queen however.
I think you could put a California King Mattress on a Queen base as long as you kept in centered just 3″ extra on each side.
We put a King mattress on our California King frame in one of our previous coaches and just cut a plywood base that I covered with fabric and padded the edges and it was great.

Although a Cal King is not as wide as a regular King, it is longer, and that added length most likely will be a problem. There is something called a Camper King or RV King that is the width of a regular Cal King but only the normal 80 inch length of a regular King. By the way, a regular King and a regular Queen are the same 80 inch length.
There are several RV mattress sizes that are different from household sizes, so be careful
I think Jeff at ETLC installed an adjustable bed frame and mattress in a coach. It would allow one to have some walk around space at the foot of the bed when the upper portion is raised while having the full length when lowered. Talk to Jeff and see what he can do for you.

We bought our custom sized mattress in 2008 from Royal Sleep Products in 900 Haltom, Ft. Worth, Texas. When we bought it they charged the queen sized price for any custom mattress smaller than a queen size and the king sized price for any custom mattress smaller than a king. They had several types of mattresses to choose from and we have been very pleased with ours.
