Level low questions
Happy Sunday!
I had some time to start looking into my level low issues today and could use some help. I have a 94 Liberty XL40 and when I got it the leveling system worked twice and then never again. It airs up fine in drive mode. When switched to level low the dash lights up but won’t really do any thing when I hit the switches. If I push up or down on the rear switches I have a little puff out of the steering bay but no movement. The front does nothing. When checking voltage at the blue strip above the 5 stack I have 24+ volts when pressing up on any of the three corresponding coil wires and roughly 9ish volts when pushing the down switch. The top coil, which I think is air supply never has any voltage. Am I supposed to have power to the top coil? And am I supposed to have 24 volts to the other coils? I assumed that mine was 12v on all coils but the drive coil because that’s what was in them but I am really just learning how all this stuff works. I’m about 6 months into Prevost ownership. The norgren stack valve probably needs replaced and with your coach there is a chance that the control voltage for the valves is 12volt while the road position valve remains and 24 v as Liberty modifies that system.

Thanks Jeff.! I am working thru rehab of my level system. Mine is all 24V (98 XlE) I have found 4 of the 5 coils bad. Have verfied the inner workings of the stack by using a good coil. 24 volts to all. Hard to believe 4 bad at one time? Has there been a corrosion problem with the coils? I have noticed a rust coating inside the bore of the coils(bad) also on the base of the coils there is a slight white on flat bottom of coils.. Didn’t mean to hop on thread but sounds like we are trouble shooting same thing!!! Bob

We have 5 air water filters/driers/separators on our bus. If moisture is allowed into the air system(s)? bad things happen.

What Liberty do you have? A “Lady” or a “Classic”??#1 coil is for supply#2 coil is for manually raising & lowering front
#3 coil is for the normal ”travel” mode
#4 coil is for manually raising and lowering the back right
#5 coil is for manually raising and lowering the back left
We have a 96 Liberty XL “Classic”. The “Classic” means it’s mainly a 12v house, with ole fashion CBs, fuses, switches, etc, very little automation. The Liberty “Ladies” have a 24v house with multiplex, circuit boards, obsolete software, automation, etc.
Prevost tech pubs don’t tell the whole story because Liberty changes the leveling system controls.
Our Liberty “Classic” 5 stack level low manifold has ALL 12v(Norgren# 54452-02=$25ea) coils except #3 the travel mode coil, it’s 24v.A Liberty “Lady” ALL coils are 24v(Norgren# 54452-03, $17ea).Coils are voltage controlled.If you have a “Liberty “Classic” and somebody installed a 24v coil in the #2 position, the front will not go up or down when using manual mode.If you have a Liberty “Lady” and someone put in a 12v coil in the #2 position 24v will cause it to fail.Or maybe it is a bad 24v coil in the #2 position. Switch it with #4 or #5 and see if the problem follows.Jeff and Lindsay

I think you’re right about needing to replace the whole stack in the near future or at least taken apart and cleaned. But for now I switched all the coils over to 24v and everything seems to be working. I need to find the drains, i didn’t know about them. Thanks for all your help!

The valves under the coils are also called “armatures”, Norgren pt# 54462-31, $36 ea.
A complete 24v manifold with armatures and coils is Norgren pt# D0043EP5W2 or Prevost pt# is 641205 -

new info: I had been using a soapy water mix to ck for leaks for years.. Problem is some got into coil bore and rusted. I cleaned out with small bottle brush and they worked… I have 5 new ones coming! lesson learned! What is the purpose of the red caps on the armature?
