  • Fast air leak and tag axle question

So, I you could take a look at this video on You Tube you will see the air gauge go up to 125# range, the air dryer “sneezes” and the air compressor stops supplying additional air to the tanks. The air pressure then drops to around 100# in 30-45 seconds, the air supply begins again, pressure back to 125#, sneeze, lather, rinse, repeat endlessly.

The 2nd pressure gauge is for the step so that’s turned off to eliminate that air leak source. There is a cut off for air to the drivers seat and this still happens. I don’t hear any leaks from the door lock or the tag valve beside the drivers seat. We don’t have any other air powered accessories (doors, toilet, etc.).

What I did find is that if the engine’s running and I raise the tag axle, the air pressure drops to about 80#, builts back to 100# but will not increase beyond that point and never gets back to 125# and never sneezes. Regular or high idle makes no difference.

This air loss happens anytime the engine is running including driving down the road so that you can hear is “sneeze” even while driving and not touching the brakes or anythhing else. By the way, the main and aux air tank pressures never change and hold a steady 125# while the aux tank (accessory) is fluxuating between 100 and 125.

I assume the tank should build pressure even with the tag raised and, being a 1997 chassis, I “assumed” the tag is raised by air pressure when flipping the tag switch but I hear air bleeding off like my old 1988 where it just released air from the bags. Any and all help and/or suggestions are welcome.

    Governor is bad?

My aux pressure has to get below 90 psi before the engine compressor pumps her back up?

My Bus does that when I have an external compressor connected to the port above the chassis batteries and the Engine running. I noticed this phenomena when I was troubleshooting some air leaks initially, had the bus connected to my shop compressor, and when the Bus Sneezed it dropped the pressure just like what his is doing.

You may have more than one issue. The air bleed you’re hearing with tag lift could be one (or both) of the tag lift chambers leaking. I’ve fought with both of mine trying to stop air leaking, wasn’t successful doing it on bus. Had to remove chambers to properly line up both halves with diaphragm sandwiched in between.

Those are somewhat finicky due to clamp design it seems.
