  • Compression fittings tools and advice request

Posted by Mike on April 1, 2017 at 8:53 am

gentlemen, as I am about to hunt down a leak near my right rear passenger axle I was wondering if someone would be willing to recommend where and what size compression fittings are required for the various norgren / air fittings and valves as I’ll probably start to replace any push in fitting with compression style. I have yet to purchase a compression tool or any fittings for my bus, But I know I need to get prepared to have some handy in the old toolbox

thank you in advance for any help provided

thanks Jeff, I’m looking over some on Amazon and it seems like I just need to pick some popular size thread and popular size tubing.

would most norgren be 1/4″ 3/8″ and 1/2″ npt?

Then I’ll get some various options for the tubing side

end wrenches to tighten fittings. I bought a pvc cutter (looks like big mouth tin snip) for tubing. Also get the gray teflon tape instead of plain white/more durable and seals better. I also use a cheap ultrasonic leak detector($50) or just turn my hearing aids on high. actually both. And a squirt/spray bottle with a shot of dawn dish soap and mostly water. even a bubble thats takes a minute to develope is siginifcant. Join the battle of ageing air compenets.

Add Fastenal to the list, but I have had the best luck with Grainger.

Make sure they are DOT fittings.

    thanks gentleman.

i had not thought of fastenal but I have one local to me that would make it easier.

On the compression tool – lol, I was thinking in the terms of my AV business – those fittings take a special tool.

    Happy travels,

    thanks george.

i think my comfort level will be walking in to a counter at fastenal

its nice to confirm dot, country of manufacture, and see the product prior to just ordering online.

I received my ultrasonic probe today and will be checking it out later.

I’m excited to see how this goes. I am well armed and hopefully find my issue quickly.

    Thanks !

Mike, when you order all the compression components, parts, pieces, and dodads to build your air system inventory, make sure you include some socks too. You’ll never know when they will come in handy, especially with an other coach.

Jon I was sure you wore compression socks when you worked on your air system.
