  • Marathon Aux Regulator Problem

Posted by Tad on October 22, 2015 at 11:46 pm

    Hi All,

My Marathon Air pressure regulator seems to have a problem. The Marathon air 12v compressor mounted in the generator bay was running continuously and air was leaking from around an electric box on the aft bulkhead of the steering bay (you can adjust the pressure at which the house (Marathon) air compressor starts and stops in this box with two screws). The air pressure indication was higher then what I had set (around 130psi) and it seems it is dumping air and not shutting off the compressor when the pressure reaches the upper limit. The yellow valve connecting bus air to house system is CLOSED.

This happened once before and I adjusted the air pressure set points for the house (Marathon)compressor and things went back to normal for awhile (months).

Any ideas? Replace this regulator? Any suppliers other than Marathon?

Also, this coach does not have an ON/OFF switch for the house air compressor. When the compressor runs continuously and gets hot, the circuit breaker must get hot because it will not open. I replaced the breaker once with one from Marathon, but still have the same problem. Has anyone with this same set up wired a switch to control the power to the compressor? If so, where? The way it is set up now, I have to power the coach down and disconnect the wires to the compressor or wait for the CB to cool enough to open.

My aux compressor in the gen bay is 120v. The regulator is a common air compressor regulator you can buy at the depot. I just recently changed mine out. I have an on/off switch on the panel to the left of the drivers seat. The circuit breaker is located on the panel in the bedroom.

If you have a 12v compressor, the circuit breaker would be located on the DC panel in the bedroom or wherever your’s is located.

130 PSI is to high, I have mine set at 90. The pocket doors, gen air bags, floor slide, etc. are all low regulated pressures.

I would replace the regulator as Tom suggest.

Another supplier is WW Granger and maybe on ebay. I’ve had to change that regulator on both Prevost I’ve owned. Install it out of the box as its preset.

If you need to adjust be careful with the adjustment screws . They seem to be very short and you unknowing screw it off the female housing tab. This caused mine to not respond correctly and I first believed I had a defective switch.

Actually it was operator error “me” not paying attention.

One more thing….The most common part that needs to be replaced in the AUX system is the check valve. If you run your AUX system all the time 2 years is about the life. This check valve is also available at WW Grainger.

I have wired an on-off switch for AUX compressor in my drivers bay.

If you need pictures of valve location I have them …let me know and I’ll post.

thank you. I’ll see what I can find at Granger. Maybe they have one with an on/off switch.

Al, please post the pix of the valve and switch install. Thanks much.

    Larry,

Check valve location on compressor. On our bus Marathon has mounted the AUX tank on top of steer axle fender well behind the painted fender cover. Replaced this tank soon after buying bus a little over a year ago.

So much trash in the old tank it would actually plug the drain line.

In order to catch water out of the compressor a small drain holding tank was mounted before the drivers bay line went to holding tank.

Seems Marathon was mounting AUX compressors and tanks at several locations during our time period build.

Lower left corner is intake air filter and a custom muffler-silencer. Reduces noise of the one lung small compressor.

On-off compressor switch mounted in drivers bay. Marathon had put the only switch in the bedroom electric panel which prevented easy access. While in storage runs about once in 3 days if left on.

AUX compressor is normally off in bus barn.

Thanks Al, good clear pix and now I have a clearer pix of what you were explaining.

On our coach the tiny aux air compressor Marathon installed was wearing out even though it was only running once every few days. Symptoms were running much longer than usual and the insulation of the power lead wires was actually melting off. Clearly it was pulling many more amps than designed.

I replaced the compressor with a 100% duty cycle Viair compressor. No problems since.
