Aux Compressor Air Dryer Canister ?
Posted by Pat & Jan on June 6, 2016 at 11:09 amThis pictured part’s function is to keep moisture out of the auxillary air compressor line. It is located under the drivers seat in my coach. I would like to purchase a complete new (black) canister, brass fitting and interior components but there are no part numbers. Can someone with expertise help me find the vendor that sells this product?

Pat,
That has been called a “spitter” and I am sure its life span can be measured in days. So far very few I have seen have a long life, even when serviced routinely.
I did away with mine and used the Norgren water trap immediately downstream from my compressor. I have to manually drain it routinely but I know it works because I am draining it. With the spitter I had hoped it would work, but was never sure.
Our aux system is prone to expensive problems if it is not kept dry because all the Norgrens, pocket doors, bed lift, dump valves, etc are on that system and moisture will adversely impact all of those items.
My system is modified from the way Prevost and Liberty built it so I am reluctant to suggest you do the same without studying the impact. I modified the Prevost side using the Norgren trap for the aux compressor, and eliminated the spitter and solenoid valve Liberty installed and instead used a check valve on the aux compressor line downstream from the water trap where it feeds the Liberty manifold. That change was part of a larger project to add shut off valves on every pneumatic system on the accessory side (Prevost and Liberty).

if you want I have those in stock also and can give you part number on monday

Pat, I would suggest you use a water trap with the ability to hold a reasonable volume of water, or a small dryer in place of the “spitter”.
I think Jeff agrees with me and has been researching suitable devices to keep moisture from all accessory systems when the coach relies on accessory air from the aux compressor. The “spitter” works but is not reliable over the long term, in part because internal corrosion seems to occur quickly.

I replaced mine recently with a Milton water separator that has an auto drain. I attached a clear tube run into a small glass bottle to monitor the moisture that is removed. And it is crazy how much water My Aux compressor makes. I am thinking about adding a visible Desiccant filter downstream of that for insurance.

I changed the entire system on my coach to essentially the following……….
From the aux compressor there is a small section of copper to assist in cooling the air flow, then 15 feet plus or minus of air line into a Norgren water trap with an indicator on the bowl so the water level can be seen.
From there it passes through a check valve into the manifold. The check valve eliminates the solenoid valve originally installed. The manifold distributes air to the house system and into the Prevost accessory tank. The aux pump pressure switch reads pressure at the manifold.

Pat, here’s a thread on the subject
