  • Norgren Solenoid Red-Tipped Exhaust Port Leak

Posted by Jeff on May 1, 2020 at 2:01 pm
If the red-tipped exhaust port on a 3-way Norgren solenoid is leaking, and this is one of two Norgrens w/ solenoids that Liberty installs as part of their automatic leveling system, does it mean that:
    1. The 3-way Norgren with the solenoid attached is leaking; OR
    2. The 5-way Norgren in the rear associated with it is leaking?
As additional info – I just replaced the “old” leaking red-tipped exhaust armature with a brand new one and it still has a very slow leak – the “old” one actually was not that old as it had a 2018 manufacture date as does the Norgren to which it was attached.

That is a solenoid valve, and when power is applied it passes air, in this case to move a spool inside the three port valve. When power is removed the air that was applied to move the spool is exhausted from the red cap so there is no air pressure remaining on the actuator that moves the spool and the spool under spring pressure goes to its normal position.

A long way of saying the only way air should be coming from the red cap area is if the solenoid valve has power removed, and only then for a short period it takes to bleed pressure down.

If that valve body was replaced there were two O rings associated with it and if they are missing, misaligned or old air could be leaking. Or the valve body is leaking. Remove the solenoid valve actuator from the 3 port valve, make sure the two relatively small O rings are in place, and then with it assembled determine if it leaking through the cap (bad valve body) or from around its mounting position (leaking from the area of O rings.)

    Thank you Jon.
I did replace it today, including new o-rings that came with the new solenoid armature, yet the new one also leaks.
I have double checked the new o-rings and they look a-ok as did those on the previous solenoid armature.
I just confirmed again, it leaks only through the exhaust port. AND ONLY WHEN THE AUX AIR TANK IS NOT DRAINED. If the aux air tank is empty, there s no leak.

If the aux tank is empty, there is no air to leak.

I can’t be sure from the photo but I think that valve is to exhaust air from the left or right rear air bags. The air released will come out the three port valve, but the air to the solenoid valve is accessory air.

I’m guessing on the purpose of the valve. If I am correct you will have its twin near it.

also be careful if you replace the coil. there are 24v coils, and 12v coils. Liberty changed out their coils to 12v coils, so if you have the 5 bank of coils – the middle coil number 3 down is 24v – and the others 1,2,4,5 are 12v coils. Prevost sells the 24v coil but I dont believe they sell the 12v coils. Liberty will sell you the 12v coils, I think they are $32 a piece. If I remember correctly, they are IMI Norgren 92J coils. the 24v ones are 94J.

    NO!

Only true on Classic models, not the 24 volt Elegant Lady.

Yes the twin is nearby – within 6 inches.
To alleviate that leak since a new solenoid stem with new o-rings did not do it, would the fault lie within the body of that particular 3 way valve? So replace it? As opposed to the five way in the back?

Not being at the coach or seeing the origin of the leak I am speculating that your description of the leak at the red cap suggests the valve body is not sealing.

If you are certain the O rings are in place, not pinched or misaligned then I cannot think of anything else it could be. I have to admit to never having or having heard of a leak as you describe, but I have refreshed those valves with new ones on previous coaches before mine started leaking.
