    Charles,

Each have a purpose, the softener takes care of hard water and doesn’t really do any filtering. We have 3 filters on our Marathon and we drink the water from the fridge. A whole house filter, an inline filter to the fridge and a refrigerator filter.

We we had an 01 Magna 40′ and it was a great motorhome.

We have an RO system on our coach now and I installed one on our previous coach.

That to me is the most valuable because it provides our drinking water, water to the coffee maker and water to the refrigerator for ice. We don’t ingest water from the holding tank because the quality of water we get around the country is unknown so it is used solely for the toilet, showers and washing. I wouldn’t mind getting rid of hard water, but lacking space we do without a softener and only have a two element whole house water filter.

    Jon ,

Installs under Sink ? Does it require the pressure tank that most of them listed have with ? What Brand / Model Did You use ? I drink a Lot of Water from the Fridge. After My Daily Pot of Coffee , Which I like to make with Good Cleeeeen Water for Sure !

Depending on your floor plan (if the refrigerator is tipped you can put it there) where the RO system goes is determined by what fixtures will get the RO water.

You do need a small accumulator dedicated to the RO system, but with the accumulator and the 3 stage RO unit from Lowe’s I think my total cost was about $200 plus my time for labor.

My existing coach has it located in the water bay, but the system was factory installed otherwise running the water lines to the fridge, coffee maker and sink RO faucet would have been a challenge. When I installed the one in my last coach I pulled the fridge and just teed off a water line running to the sink.

There are many replacement choices for the filter cartridge in your inlet line to your fresh water tank. They range from more than 60 micron down to 5 micron. If you don’t mind the slow fill time, the smaller 5 micron rated charcoal filters will do the best job of filtering out the sediments and improving the taste of the shore supplied water going into the fresh water tank. The downside of using a 5 micron cartridge is the throughput volumn. 5 micron filters are usually rated at around 2GPM which requires well over an hour to refill your fresh water tank.

I have settled in on a 20 micron sediment cartridge for the main fresh water in filter and use the smaller 5 micron charcoal filter for the Franke drinking water filter under the kitchen sink. I use chlorine bleach to sanitize the fresh water system annually. During the process I try not to completely drain the system by keeping enough water remaining in the system throughout the 3 flushes to prevent air from getting into the lines and water heaters.
