Water Softeners
Ok what are your opinions on water softners, I was thinking avbout buying one, They rent them down south here but if I owned it I could use it anywhere and help keep the deposits out of all my water lines also,
The guy next to me had one it was a blue bottle looking thing and it used morton table salt last year , well this year he got rid of it and he is renting one he said it used way too much salt ans was a pain in the butt ?
Any opinion would be appreciated

Over long term ownership I have not experienced any issues due to hard water. That does not mean I haven’t had hard water deposits, it just means none has impacted anything on our coach.
But while it is unlikely I will ever consider adding one, there is one addition I would recommend to supplement the typical whole house filters most coaches seem to have. That is a reverse osmosis system that can be plumbed to provide RO water to the refrigerator or certain faucets for coffee, ice cubes and drinking water.
We have that because different venues have had water with odors ranging from chlorine to iron and the RO unit delivers water with no taste or odor.

Installed in drivers side bay forward of plumbing bay. Sits inside a two sided enclosure next to wall.
3 connections….. Water in, water out, emergency drain. Requires no electric …. Incoming water spins a paddle wheel. All parts enclosed inside unit including salt pellets. Cost appox. $995

I really like our Kinetico in the bus as it gives us the same soft water in the coach at all times with no consideration for the external water source. Until we recently installed a softener here in the house I used to tell Elsie I am going to shower in the coach as it just feels so much better!

What dont you like about the On the Go water softner?I was looking at purchasing one of the DI units, which uses the same housing but different bed to make DI water for washing the coach.

I bought it thinking it would help with the water spots when washing the bus and learned that lesson after the first wash. For washing, DI is the only way to go. So the softener just sets in the bus barn. I thought it would be a PIA taking it along for the bus, hooking and unhooking not to mention storage.

This is the DI system I have for rinse. Spray with city water, brush with soapy water, rinse with DI, about 95% less
water spots. I use the mist setting on the nozzle, included.
About 25 rinses before gauge displays recharge neccessary

If you have’nt purchased a DI unit yet, you might contact On the Go
and see if you can dump the resin in your water softner and replace it
with their DI refill kit of $80. I believe the spun fiberglass housing
is the same between the units. -
I am in the process of building my own DI Filter. I am waiting on the cartiridges yet. Cost a total of $212 plus a few connectors; Used two Big Blue Pentek 4.5″ x 20″ filter housing and TDS/Conductivity meter from Filter Fast ($92), and two refillable mixed bed DI cartridges from Fountian Head ($118).

I bought Invisable Chambois years ago and it’s worked well, but I wouldn’t do it again. It has to be sent back for recharge and there are much better ways with the ones you can recharge yourself.

I just purchased this DI unit from On The Go which is supposed to provide spotless rinse water for around 9 per gallon.

Click to view larger imageThis system was designed for a user requiring large quantities of pure water with limited space thus demanding the system to be extremely portable and compact. The fact that the system will also produce DI water at the lowest cost per gallon provides an additional benefit related to return on investment and ongoing operating cost. Made up of one ¼ cubic foot tank of virgin cation resin and two ¼ cubic foot tanks of virgin anion resin this deionizer will produce approximately 2 times the amount of water as the dual tank deionizer. Stage 1 is the cation tank and stages 2 and 3 are anion tanks. This system needs an area of 30″ wide by 22″ high by 10″ deep for hook-up. At 54 pounds, moving the unit is no problem.
