Single Holding Tank
Posted by Shelby & Barbara on December 19, 2016 at 2:20 pmI’m putting this out for discussion. I have a Hoffman Conversion 1991 40XL La Marage and it has a single Holding Tank, is this normal? I haven’t had any problems, but should I consider updating?

I have had two single tanks. My last two coaches were built that way. My first Liberty had separate gray and black and as far as I am concerned there is nothing wrong with a single tank. You don’t have one side filling up before the other, you only have a single valve to service or leak, and both stink as bad as the other so combining them just gets the job done.
If yours isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Usually we have enough other things to do to our coaches without dealing with things that are not a problem.

We had a single tank on our Foretravel. Never had a problem. Easier to manage than two tanks.

Single tank. All we’ve every known. Works for us. At this point I’d prefer a single tank so when it comes time to dump I didn’t have two tanks to fool with. Like Jon said … one tank has one set is things to fix, replace, or leak. Two tanks are double the fun and double the excitement.
Is your tank aluminum or stainless steel? If aluminum, I think you have something to monitor as the calendar continues to turn.

To me another advantage of the one tank system is dry camping. You can use the gray water bypass and now you have a huge black tank. I have found this a very great feature at times.
I like the advantages of a one tank system.

I, too, like one gray/black holding tank. It sure wouldn’t be a deal breaker on a coach purchase but it just makes better sense to me to have them together.
Our previous coach had two separate holding tanks. It never fails, one will fill up before the other which was always the gray tank. Since the black tank works best with ‘lots of water’, the one tank set-up takes care of that.
As Mikee mentioned, some coaches have a gray water bypass which Liberty has. I’ve used it several times when it was allowed. Since our holding tank is 165+ gallons, it will last a long time. All of that water going into one tank will give the tank a good flush too when it’s time to release.
