  • Adding a 2nd water pump

Posted by Ronald on May 10, 2015 at 9:40 pm

Sometime this summer, I will be working in the plumbing bay. I plan to add a water heater expansion tank and a water filtering system. We do have a Headhunter Mach 5 pump and it is working quite well. However, if I am working in this bay by removing some stuff and adding new stuff, I also may want to add a 2nd pump for when the primary pump may malfunction. I know that Jon has added a pump and I am interested what PC recommends for a secondary water pump. My first thought is to add a 12 volts pump such as the ones you find on boats.

Also, expansion tanks come in different sizes. From what I found they start at about 2 gallons and up. What would be an appropriate size?

    Your thoughts and suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Ronald

Marathon, at least the late models come with a back up water pump mounted behind main pump.

You might take a look at there set up for some ideas.

    Ron,

Each installation is going to be converter specific. Not only will each coach have a different means by which you can tie into the water storage tank, but the pump selected is going to be dependent on space limitations and easy access to power.

For my installation I tied into the water line feeding the Headhunter pump, and then rejoined the water lines downstream from the Headhunter with valves to isolate either pump. The pump I chose was a 120V 1.4 GPM,. 60PSI Shurflo. I chose that so I could manually plug it into the same outlet used by the Headhunter. Only one pump can operate at one time doing it that way. That was important because if both are powered it is unlikely you will realize one has failed until the second fails.

Due to the limited flow of 1.4 GPM compared to the 8 plus GPM of the Headhunter I added a second accumulator tank directly in line with the Headhunter toilet flush valve so that large demand for water flow and pressure is satisfied.

The coach has an accumulator to deal with expansion and to level water flow and pump operation but it is remote from the toilet flush line and did not provide sufficient flow when using the Shurflo.

    Ronald,

Is your toilet a Headhunter or other?

Ron, I have a Mach 5, with a 12 volt back up. It works great.

OK, was just curious, you’ll have to take the same approach Jon did because of the required water pressure/volume needed for the Headhunter to flush. I tried other options, but nothing worked.
