  • Groco brand 12 volt water pump

Posted by DON on March 19, 2024 at 4:48 pm

My Groco died. A lot of corrosion inside bottom of back cover.

    New they are $3000 🙁

I want to keep the original 12v controls/switches.

    Any 12 volt alternative???

Yes I have a Headhunter toilet and diaphragm surge tank.

    Use a Headhunter pump?

    I know they too are expensive but don’t think it’s 3 K.
They have their issues too, but overall a popular and a good pump.

Seems that this day and age of off grid systems there are a lot of low voltage pump options.https://www.pumpsupermarket.com/product/solar-water-pump-direct-dc/https://www.pumpsupermarket.com/product/solar-water-pump-direct-dc/

I use a Shurflo pump as a backup to my headhunter. To make it able to flush the toilet with such low flow I added an expansion tank in line with the toilet water supply line. I believe the new expansion tank is a one gallon size and I have no issues using the low volume Shurflo.

I believe the bulk of water volume for/to my Headhunter toilet is provided by my existing 4.5 gal surge/diaphragm/expansion tank.

There is a 1″ id flexible line out of the Groco pump, goes to a 1″ id copper T-type fitting screwed into the bottom of my 4.5 gal surge/diaphragm/expansion tank. The 1″ outlet of the this T fitting goes into another 1″ id copper T fitting. That T has 1″ id copper entrance, and two 1″ id exits. one of the exits has 1″ flexible line going to the Headhunter toilet.

The other exit from this second T fitting immmediately necks down to a smaller size and feeds everything else in the coach via that gray polybutylene plumbing.

My old Groco operated at 38 psi cutout and 30 psi cutin.

When hooked up to home/park water source there is a pressure reducer lowering incoming pressure to 35psi.

My point to all this is I don’t believe it needs a expensive Groco/Headhunter/Mach5 high volume pump.

I’ve yet to take my old Groco apart to see if its repairable, but I will.

    Wish me luck 🙂

    Found the problem 🙂
Took the 12vdc Groco water pump electric motor apart.
28 yrs of condensation corrosion on the lower internals 🙁
One of the brushes was stuck out away from the armature (open circuit), and both are worn.
Worst case scenario = I’ll clean everything up, and it will function well for a few more yrs.
Best case = I’ll be able to purchase new brushes and it will be good to go for decades.
I will probably drill a drain hole in the bottom of the outer case too.
Groco been good at responding to my emails.

Waiting to here back from Groco about brushes and/or rebuild kit.

In the meantime, doing a quik online search, I found the Pacific Scientific YP00358 brushes online at 3 places for about $18 ea:)

    I heard back from Groco.

They don’t sell any electric motor parts, so I ordered new brushes online for <$100.

I cleaned it up, put it back together, and its purring like a kitten again:)

When the new brushes get here I’ll have spares 🙂
