  • Cadet Kick Heater

If you have a Cadet heater that is not working (assuming you have power to the heater) it could be the thermal switch. Mine is a model UC and has 2 over temp switches, some only have 1 switch. One can be reset by pushing the little red reset button, but the 2nd one on mine is what Cadet called a one shot thermal switch and once tripped it has to be replaced. I replaced mine with an auto reset switch for 12.00. It has to be a normally closed switch with a high temp set point at 250 degree’s.

So before you replace your heater, check the 2 switches, an easy fix.

I rebuilt three of my kickspace heaters a few weeks ago. They’re not Cadets, but I think they’re all built about the same. Mine have an auto-reset limit switch (looks like yours) wired in series with a thermal fuse. I think the thermal fuse is intended as the backup, since it is a one-use component. I bought new limit switches, but decided to reuse the old ones. My dead fans are what triggered the rebuilds.

After cleaning out 35 years of dust, I was able to reuse everything except the fan motors and blades. The metal blades were fine, but the new motors are slightly thicker, so I had to find blades with a flatter pitch to maintain clearance in the enclosure. I found it interesting that each heater was configured to use only two of the four heating elements (you can choose to use all four), so I effectively have two built-in spares in the unlikely event an element goes bad. All in, I have about $30 and an hour of my time in each one, not counting time spent finding the fans and motors.

The first photo shows a fan before the rebuild, with the thermal fuse under the white fabric to the right of the limit switch, which is under the cardboard. The second photo shows a different heater with two unused heating elements.

There was a group of Cadet toe kick heaters that were recalled. Mine was in that group, but it was outside the time limit for free replacement. I bought a replacement from Cadet and pitched the recalled one. As I recall, I think I found the recall info on the Cadet website.

I am looking for 1 or 2 of those Cadet toe kick heaters. I need the blower so it does not matter if the heating element functions or is the recalled model.

    Thanks

    Roger,

I have one of those old Cadet Toe Kick heaters that I have replaced in my coach and I guess I kept it for you.

    Where are you in Michigan?
