cruise airs
Hello everyone, I have a real dumb question but i need to ask it anyway, On my 1996 Liberty i have 4 cruise airs and two have failed, in both cases it’s the compressor’s that have failed. to redo both it would be close to $9,000 so i was wondering if any thought was given to installing a 4 ton electric compressor replacing the over the road engine compressor, utilizing the OTR condenser and blower system that way the buses duct work could be used I know it is a pipe dream but it would save cutting up the roof for roof airs.

Tony,The gland is a to the high and low pressure fittings I think that it takes a 7/16 wrench to tighten them,they are notorious for leaking,when I service a Cruiseair I put 300 PSI of nitrogen and use a bubble mixture to verify that they do not leak.

Tony, had to replace one (king vavle) that was leaking. After that, still have a leak ( in two cruise airs) that will go down in about a month or just enough so the compressor will not kick in and it doesn’t take much drop in freon pressure to affect that. Hope to find the leaks, but don’t want or not looking forward to, tearing the coach apart to find them. My leaks are not at the cruise air systems behind front bumper. Took the old soap spray bottle to those and all okay under there. Carry a bottle (R12) and guages, and bump charge as needed until the fix happens.

They take R22.

Where is and what does the King Valve do???I just had a new compressor put in unit and it worked great until I got the low pressure code on the control unit. Will start looking tomorrow.

King valves or service valves is where you hook up gauge sets to check pressures and add freon or pull vacumn. Have one on low and high side, pressure and suction. They always told me to make sure you add freon from low or suction side. Google them and you tube will show you what they do. Easy to check those Tony, soap in a spray bottle. Spray and look for the bubbles. They make high dollar electronic sniffers always. I know just enough about my system to be dangerous.

Just spoke with the nice man AAP and he said that the two sided nut on the top of king valve is my like the problem. It is at the top of the valve and requirres the 7/16 wrench. be sure it snug and there should be NO leak. Thought I was going to have to replace the king valve. Back to the bus tonight.

Tony, you talking about the cap that goes over the top of square headed shaft?

If you are sure the compressors have failed, they are replaceable and AAP will sell them to you or your refrigeration specialist. But there are a number of other things that could result in the comp0ressor not running.
If you are doing your own analysis and work do not hesitate to contact AAP (an advertiser) and they will walk you or your technician through the diagnosis.
I wouldn’t begin to even think about making the change you discuss, but I am sure it is possible.

Thanks Jon I will contact AAP and seek their advice. It is getting harder and harder to find anyone willing to work on them and if you do find someone it’s hard to trust that they know what to do.

It might not be practical given the current virus situation, but East Tennessee Luxury Coach can and will work on them in Vonore TN, or if you want to go to Milford VA, AAP will also work on them.
