One of our toekick heaters is not working right
Posted by Ronald on February 13, 2016 at 10:54 amI told my wife that we will spend the next winter in Florida. She reminded me that we are in Florida. Why then do I have to have the heat on most nights? On a side note, that is when you do appreciate having in-floor heat.
Anyways, one of our toekick heaters is blowing cold air only. All the others work just fine. The defective one responds to thermostat settings but, does not blow hot air.
Your thoughts?
Thanks,
Ronald

Ron,
If your heaters are a US brand I have found parts are likely available. You could have a bad fusable link or a bad heating element based on your description of the fact the fan is responding to the thermostat so I ruled that component out as a potential problem.

Like most everything on our bus conversion, the products used are almost exclusively US made products you would find on any other conversion. So I am not worried about “running out of parts”. In any event, Jon’s comment prompted me to remove the drawer below which the culprit is mounted. That reminded me, that there are actually 3 exchangers, in series, which are not blowing hot. They are all on 1 circuit. That leads me to believe that there may be a “switch” that may be be stuck and not open to allow the antifreeze fluids to circulate.
Of course, I do not have a clue where that may be hidden and right now, I do still fight a very strong cold and will delay the search until I feel normal again. That in itself will not be an easy task, either. … 🙂 -
Ronald,
I thought you were referring to the electric kick heaters, but you’re talking about heat exchangers. Most likely there is an electric valve/solenoid that is not opening letting the hot coolant to flow. You’ll just have to track it down, I haven’t a clue as to how your conversion is setup.

I have had more than one AquaHot circulation pump fail, leading to exactly what you describe. Might that be it?

If toe kick heater is an Aqua Hot fed fan coil that is blowing cool air, rap the check valves at the pumps. They can stick closed but a rap will usually open them. They will now open for the rest of the season.

Ron, I had this problem on my aqua hot where one pump was not working..The mechanic that worked on it removed the aqua hot cover exposing the pumps and one pump was not working He then removed from the pump a screw.d like a set screw..once remove a spring was in there that had lost its expansion ,,he did not have a spring from aqua hot so he used another and kept cutting the spring untill the tension was right and pump started working been fine now for 1yr .

If you are talking about the coolant heater and not the 110V electric heater after all – like others (and you) I had that same problem. The heater blew cold air. On our bus the problem turned out to be there was a fuse INSIDE the tech-link relay module that controls the pump on the front of the bus. Sorta why I didn’t see it… it was buried inside of a device. That was my lesson learned there – some fuses are harder to see than others.
On our bus there are 2 pumps, one by the webasto and another in the front. The webasto pump worked… but without the front pump it wasn’t enough to circulate the coolant all the way.
Now, I’m sure your setup is different – but there are probably 2 pumps in all of our busses. I’d think 45′ is far to go with only 1 pump. So, in addition to all the other things… could just be a fuse.
