  • Webasto Running Somewhat

    Webasto started popping its fuse while at American Fleet after reinstalling engine in chassis about Labor Day. Today figured it out. Snipped the wires to the circulation pump located in the engine bay. Webasto runs fine. But need to wait for a young skinny flexible guy (Dano) to swap it.

    So my question is: Is it ok to run Webasto without that circulation pump in the engine bay? I presume so because we have valves to isolate flow.

    I may have killed that pump going over Teton Pass in August when for a short time coolant was 220F and tranny was showing 300F.

    Dan, I think you need that constant flow through the heat exchanger that the circulating pump provides.

    I doubt if the temps you mention caused a problem.

    Jon, you know we have 2 24 volt circulation pumps that come from MP Pumps in Michigan. One in the engine bay and one mounted next to the Webasto unit. So I presume your saying I need both of them running for adequate heat exchanger flow.

    Note: there is a third pump imbedded in a copper tubing or brass bulge near the Webasto unit too.

    At one time I had 2 circulation pumps, one dedicated to the Webasto and a second associated with the OTR. I think now I have only the Webasto pump and I presume it is tied in with the OTR. You might be OK but verify when stopped and parked you are getting circulation of coolant through the Webasto.

    The “A” plug on the Control Unit (brain box) turns on the circulating pump any time the burner is running. Very little coolant in the heat exchanger means the coolant temp would satisfy the control thermostat very quickly. And no flow could mean the latent heat could bring coolant temp above high limit thermostat which would open. If enough heat available, the high limit fusible link would open requiring replacement to fix.

    Thanks guys. I’ll probably just run the cruise airs if we overnight somewhere on the run to the skinny guy (630miles).
