24 volt batteries
Posted by Art on June 16, 2017 at 2:29 pm24 Volt system on an XL 40 has a 12 volt side and a 24 volt side and an equalizer. The way it’s wired as per diagram is baffaling series and parallel , with 24 volt side .charger on first set is charging at 12.5 V, 2nd set at 12.10 V. You look at the diagram and it is tipacal to you get to the 2nd set, 1st set pos to neg 2nd set pos to neg, then neg to neg, but the pos doesn’t tie set 1 to set 2 , I guess that’s how they get 12 & 24 volts, maybe when it is running it charges both set’s the same, or I have 2 bad batteries? date installed 2016.

Arts Royale has four 12v chassis batteries like most of our buses. They’re wired in the normal manner too. The left two are wired in series to each other(pos. to pos., neg. to neg.), and the right two are wired like the left two. This effectively makes the four individual 12v batteries into two larger 12v batteries. To get 24v a cable connects a left pos to a right neg.
On Arts Royale, there is a single lead 24v chassis battery charger. Its there in case he accidently leaves the key on or something and kills his chassis batteries(I would never do that ;). The single lead is hooked to a far left neg and a far right pos. This will charge all batts.
On my Liberty there is a dual lead Guest Pro Charger, Model#2620A. One of the leads hooks to the left 12v pair of batteries and charges those two, and the other lead is connected to the right 12v pair and charges them. http://www.marinco.com/en/products/convert/battery-chargers/onboards mine is http://www.marinco.com/en/2620a see diagram #4.
Art may have 1 and/or 2 things wrong with his bus. He may have a bad chassis battery, or 2,3,or 4. And he needs to check the old 24v chassis charger for proper operation.

When a 24 volt alternator is charging the batteries it is charging the 24 volt side (I guess that makes me Mr. Obvious), and the equalizer is what is providing the charge to the 12 volt side. That’s the simplest way so a chager can be set to do the same thing.

Pulled all batteries out charged them all them I had them load tested and they were all good the charger is a Magnetek series 900 model 924 – 24 volt and 35 amps, the batteries need to bulk at at least 14.2 to 14.4 and for 24 volt double that 28.4 then float at around 26.4 , this old charger can barely hit 24 volts ant it takes a while to hit that. After charging on work bench and load testing they are holding good I think it is a bad charger, The batteries are Walmart batts 865 cca and only 1 year old and cca is a little weak but we don’t go to the cold weather so I think a good charger will help. My charger is a 24 volt charger so any Royale guys replace old charger yet, If yes what one. I was looking at 24volt smart chargers, And I just need a 12 to 20 amp charger ? For when it is parked for a while

Except for service work on the chassis that requires a current draw on the chassis batteries, or to recharge chassis batteries that have been stored for an extended period we shouldn’t need a chassis battery charger. But when we do need to charge chassis batteries it needs to be a three stage charger capable of the voltages required in each stage specified by the battery manufacturer.
One thing I have never figured out is why we are cautioned against inadequate charging voltages. I know my chassis batteries need the voltages Art explains, yet in almost all my use with the rare exceptions I use my charger my chassis batteries only see 27.7 volts. I suspect when Prevost calls for that voltage setting they are considering that the chassis batteries in an XL or XLII are seeing elevated temperatures and thus need lower voltages for charging.

Those numbers are from a something I read from trogan about the newer batteries and the way they should be charged, My generator battery does not charge, only when gen is running and it sounded slugash when I did fire it up so I put a 5 amp trik-L-Start box on now it sounds healthy when I do start it. Problem with the way Royale did the starter charger is it is in mid bay with 1 cable to rear to starter batts and the 110 v plug , plugs into a receptial in the same compartment that has a switch marked 24 volt charger, and I can’t find any 110 volt in engine compartment, so It would be easer to get a 24 volt smart charger when needed.

I ordered a Samlex 24 volt charger SEC-2415UL it is a 3 stage smart charger that batt type can be selected with dip switches it will bulk charge at 28.8 a higher rate then float at 27 volts indefinitly if needed. It was $ 198 bucks no tax or shipping. It will be here friday,
