DN50 replace
Posted by Art on August 5, 2021 at 6:07 pmClint with Blue Bird shared this Mod getting rid on DN50 and replace with Bosch alternator, A kit for Detroit with Detroit brackets for a Bosch high amp Alternator. Look at all that room much simpler. Must be 100 lbs lighter less big bracket and big alternator? This is on a Blue Bird

The 50DN is oil cooled and on a coach set up to run an A/C through the inverter the load can be heavy and as such will generate a lot of heat.
On a 12V house just one A/C unit can draw a 130 amp load. Add a second and a 50DN is almost overloaded. The load on the 50DN is more reasonable on a 24V house, the lighter the load the less heat.

Yes your right but for me my DN50 is 12v and I don’t have OTR and my inverter is not set up for inverting AC’s so If for some reason my DN50 failed this would be just fine. the advantage is you could carry a spare Boashalternator- way lighter- better access to compressor-cheaper. It would be a option for some

Almost any conversion without OTR will be set up to run at least one A/C through an inverter, and most owners will rather than run their generator.

Looks like a decent setup based on your needs. Many of the Prevost buses used a twin bosch alternator setup.
I’ve switched to the 24 volt AIR COOLED 50DN conversion. I have road air and I’ve put about 125,000 on this gen in high heat conditions.

Good point Tom,
Bosch might offer a cooling kit for this alternator. Worth the investment. Alternator fire could wipe out your bus !
Prevost factory has taken this step on most alternators running a pipe downward to draw cool air.

From Wikipedia: An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current.[2] For reasons of cost and simplicity, most alternators use a rotating magnetic field with a stationary armature.[3] Occasionally, a linear alternator or a rotating armature with a stationary magnetic field is used. In principle, any AC electrical generator can be called an alternator, but usually the term refers to small rotating machines driven by automotive and other internal combustion engines.

Following this thread.
Jon, none of my three roof air run through the Xantrex Inverter/Charger. I wish at least one of them was configured to do that. I start the generator before I even get out of the garage and once I do that I turn on all three A/C units. I put as much load as possible on the 20Kw generator.
Hope all of the PC community is doing well.

I shared this Art. The Blue Bird Wanderlodge is a 12v bus, 99.9% of the owners run the generator for roof top OTR, the inverters on a bird were never really meant to power the A/Cs. The 12v DN50 is also harder to source and repair than the 24v DN50. For those reasons it’s seen as a liability.
Simplicity is a good thing. Agreed though, it does look a little odd.

Hey Clint! Yes on my Royale with out OTR the 50DN is 12v and it only charges the house batteries and it does not power any roof AC’s, The long Delco alternator is 24v for chassis only, and the single Vanner splits 24v for 12v chassis. Pretty simple if my 12v 50DN ever fails I would definitely think about changing to the Bosch, I like the access with out the 50DN. If I had OTR the 5oDN would be 24v for OTR

Looking to see if anyone with a near my bus vintage 1992 has two of the Vanner Equalizers and knows how they are wired. My House Batteries currently are not charging when the Bus is running, Chassis batteries are charging. I have two alternators and 1 Vanner in the engine bay above the batteries. The second one is missing, screws are still sitting there and a 2/0 cable is wound up and tie wrapped. Anyone with two of these that knows how they are to be wired or can share a schematic that would help me troubleshoot. Thanks.

Sounds to me like the “house” alternator or its voltage regulator is inop.
My ole bus (96 Liberty Classic) has 2 alternators and 1 Vanner. One alternator is 24v and with the help of the Vanner takes care of the “Chassis” systems. The other alternator is a 12v unit (no Vanner) and takes care of the coach/house systems. The house and chassis are not linked in any way. -
Ok Thanks for the Input Don. I am perplexed with this issue, I will be digging into it more very soon as I do more research, but what it looks to me is the 50DN 24VDC Engine mounted alternator stopped working so they replaced the Belt driven 12 Volt House Alternator with a 24 VDC alternator to run the chassis. I will be tracing all the wires soon, as it’s on my todo list. Luckily my Generator still charges the house batteries.
