  • LIFEPO Battery charging

Posted by Art on March 5, 2022 at 9:21 pm

I was working on a 2017 Renegade working on 450 aqua hot and I noticed burner running a little fast, checked volts 14.45 and they had been plugged in for 24 or more hours. He said he had new LIFEPO batteries installed he said installer said they always charge at a high rate, Is that true?? and if not what’s wrong with inverter set up?? In float mode what should they charge at??

Absorption 14.2 – 14.6 and Float 13.4 – 13.8. Hope they have a way to heat it in cold weather charging.

As Tom points out the battery charging profile is the same as the AGM batteries that were replaced by LiFePo4 batteries.

The batteries when charged always deliver more voltage when in float, but when being charged in bulk and absorb the electrical system voltage is just like the AGM.

Can the charger side of the inverter change it’s charging volts to compensate for LIFEPO4 batteries?? Is the cold charging the only difference? I’ve seen on this forum people have to make changes to change over?

My charging voltage is the same as it was for AGM batteries and the current (amps) I set to a low value (10 amps) so when plugging into 50 amp shore power I am able to power my water heater, water pump, at lease 2 A/Cs, etc.

As mentioned previously my LiFePo4 batteries are in an insulated compartment and temperature in that compartment is thermostatically controlled for the heater to kick on at 40F and off at 50F so there are no charging concerns.
