There are several brands out there that replace the start capacitor on AC motors such as the A/C compressor. This prevents the high surge current at motor start up. There is no hard hum on compressor start using them.
I have not heard a bad report on using them and have seen the reduced current on start up. A digital volt meter will give you a hint of the reduction but will not show the real surge when using a start capacitor. The meter is to slow to show the surge accurately.

I use them on the 2 compressors that run off the alternator or house batteries and it seems to help.

Even My House I’m going to install one, The hotter it is outside the more head pressure there is and the more amps on start up and harder to start you will here the louder it is on start up, Yesterday at home it was unusually hot, and it the late afternoon the compressor outside stopped working, Pulled the cover off and one of the smaller wire on the capacitor burned at the terminal, I’m sure it was a loose connection but because of the high amps in the heat of the day, soft start capacitor amps would be way less, easer on everything.

I saw a new unit that plugs into the pole so you don’t have to open the roof units. Helps run air in 30a parks.
