  • 50 Amps RV Outlet info needed

Posted by Dorel on October 10, 2017 at 2:14 pm

Finally…I believe I will get the approval to proceed with 50 Amps hook up where we store our coach, have to pay for material / installation, etc…

Looking for info / suggestions / forum experience on material / wire sizes / installation, electrical RV posts, etc.

Power sourse is about 150ft from my site in one of the buildings, I am looking on probably getting a post with 2×110 GFI, 1x30amps and 1x50amps hookups.

    Thanks.

You have a Prevost … so why not go top shelf for your shore power outlets: Jamestown Advanced Products

    https://www.jamestownadvanced.com/t/category/rv-power-outlets/access-door-lighted

Jamestown lets you pick how you want the three outlet configured. I went with 50amp RV, 30amp RV, and 20amp GFI. I think that was a mistake. My electrician wired it to a 100amp breaker. Now I wish I would have gone with 50amp RV, 50amp RV, and a 20amp GFI convenience outlet. You ask why 50/30/20 was a mistake? With a 50/50/20 configuration I could plug in two coaches and allow them to take all the power they need. If I need 30amp (like for my race trailer) I could use a 50amp RV to 30amp RV adapter. I’ve used a the 20amp GFI outlet a few times while working around the coach.

I recently received a flyer from Jamestown Advanced in which they talk about the “new design”. From the pictures it looks like they have reduced how the lip below the plugs sticks out.

I found the unit very well made. The electrician who installed it said it was very, very well designed and built. Have had now two winters and three summers, so far NO corrosion. Very happy. Would buy again.

Jamestown will put a customer logo on the box if want it. I asked about the Prevost logo and was told they would have an upcharge for creating the logo. I would have thought Jamestown would have the Prevost logo … or maybe the Prevost Community logo as standard options. If there is enough demand or pressure from individuals of influence, the Prevost logo might be in their standard offering.

What wires to us? Let your electrician worry about that. You’ve got local codes to be concerned about and any voltage drop given the distance.

I should add that if you have a transfer switch and can power your house/shop off the buddy plug on the coach’s generator, that you can probably integrate the outlet for the cable from the buddy plug to the house/shop service into the panel that you’re using for shore power.

Model: CHU1N9N4NS Available at MENARDS. Very similar to the units Dick suggested. I used one on a generator that i built a few years ago. Great setup.

I have a warehouse and large lot in Green Bay, Wisconsin and I have toyed with the idea of putting a 50 amp service outside the building for those Prevost owners on this site to park at my warehouse lot (it is huge and easy to get into and out of) and connect to power at no charge when they come to Green Bay for a visit or Packer Game. There is not much of a view, or have a dump station, (I can offer city water to refill tank). I have two 400 amp services into the building so it is just running a line from the inside of the building to the outside box. I am wondering just how much power is drawn with a Coach. I would be willing to provide the power at no charge but don’t want to have to take out a loan to pay Wisconsin Power. Some insight would be appreciated. I would only want Prevost’s to use the site.

Power consumption could be anywhere between 1KW (batteries floating with just fridge and other minor consumers on) to 12 KW (using all 100 amps the connector provides). So for a 24 hour period consumption would range from 24kWh to 288 kWh, so roughly from $2.4 to $29 per day.

Well, Golly, that is not too bad I will try to work on it next summer if all goes well and post it on the site. MB

Dick and all, good information…I have also done some research no the net…

50/50/20 sounds like a good option, even though I am the only Prevost in the City own RV Storage lot…

Another issue that just came last night…

City Mayor is OK with getting this done for me ONLY and I have to have it cover the entire cost / installation / metered consumption, no problem there…

Now the City Manager claims that due to “regulations” he cannot sell the incoming city power to residents? I still have to meet with this gent to get his view / ruling on this…BTW, he parks his new 5th wheel 3 sites from mine…

    Hope to get it resolved…

Depending how much incoming capacity there is, you could even go with 50/50/50 which would give you the maximum amount of flexibility. If someone needs only 20amps or 30amps RV … you adapters.

I suspect there is either a local ordinance or power company limitation or state public service regulation that limits or restricts the “resale” of electricity which the city manager feels he or she needs to research further. If that is a problem, you might be able to get around that by you paying for a “separate service” with its own meter main box close to the meter and then the wiring you were planning on.

That said … many municipalities offer RV parks with lots that don’t have separate metering across the country. Hopefully once the city manager goes through his or her process, you’ll be fine.

If the mayor and city manager had some vision and creativity, they might realize that the city could (1) provide additional services to the residents and (2) make some additional revenue by offering parking spots with power.

Dick, thanks, exactly what I presented to the Mayor after the “approval” discussion… business plan with proposed / ballpark investment and revenue for the Storage facility with all rings and bells, property value increase, etc…

Mayor suggested that now understands the need for power on the Prevost Coach, but cannot use City residents $$$ for this improvement, unless I make this is private event, just for me, no problem…

I guess, they do not see too many coaches around to understand the electrics / electronics / computers built into a coach compared to a 5th wheel…but expressed the desire to see it inside, all their leadership admire the coach when on Public Service Dept / RV storage property…got calls from the Directors, that the Police were roaming around the coach after i purchase it, saying that the engine or something is left on…in fact I had to explain that it is the Autogen maintaining power to the coach, automatic…no more questions after that, just smiling faces and waving from the Police Dept that monitors the City Properties..if I will just get the City Manager convinced…

    Thanks.

Could the city manager survey the current tenants to find out how many others are interested in the availability of continuous electricity? Some of the other tenants might have refrigerators or other appliances they’d like to provide electricity to.
