LED Taillight Conversion
Hi Everyone,
Im a newbee owner and after looking at what was available for my 2000 XL I decided to take on making a tail light conversion myself. Being that I am a mechanical engineer I had a source to waterjet out the new sub plate I needed to bolt to the existing bracket. I just wanted to share and I also have some other pics of the brackets in case anyone is interested. The cool part is instead of spending roughly 1500.00 to 2,000 on a purchased kit, I did it all for about 400 bucks by the time it was all said and done. Here is a before and after shot….on to the side marker lights 🙂

Interesting retro look.
Prior to the introduction of square tail lights which were first installed on DDEC coaches, all Prevost coaches had the round tail lights not unlike the ones shown.

Just wanted something different. What sold me on these fixtures is the integrated reverse lights around the stop and tail lights. Heres a shot with the brakes and reverse lights on. I just didn’t care for the rectangular oval ones out there.

Did you use have to convert voltage to 12 Volt?

From what I was told by the VIN this coach was one of the first of the model year 2000 before they switched to the XLII. So to my luck the system was already 12 volt so for me it was just making some new wiring harnesses then plug and play.

I believe all your lights except the headlights are 24, but on my 97 all exterior lighting was 12 volt. I don’t know when they made the switch.
Those reverse lights integrated with the regular lights are neat.

Im debating on wether or not to replace the side lights with new fixtures or just buy LED replacement bulbs….any advise? The center rear stop light I just put LED replacement bulbs in but Im not thrilled with the result, mainly I like the clear lenses that the new LED fixtures have…..oh well…..project after project after project…..etc!

Dave, Your conversion looks great. It’s somthing that I want to do too. I’m not sure if the light bucket you created would fit my older coach, it it sure looks close. I don’t have the luxury of 12 volt lights, but I have found some much less cool 4″ round 24 volt LED’s that will work. The old lights back there are just not bright enough for me. Any other pictures would be great.

Thanks Bill and Everyone for your great opinions and comments. Ok here are a few more photos…..One shows the existing bracket from prevost with my new stainless sub plate bolted to the front. You can see how I had to modify the bracket to cut out most of the cross ribbing….it doesnt really effect the strength though because the sub plate more than makes up for it. The other photo is just a front view of the assembly before install.
