  • No start…

Posted by Dale on March 11, 2014 at 5:23 pm

Looking for a little guidance. This is on my 92 XL. The bus has been parked for a couple of weeks. We’ve had several people on and off the bus doing things and somewhere along the way the switches for the start batteries were left on. I’ve got several things going on at once here. The house batteries are out to be replaced, and the driver’s seat is put being reupholstered. Not sure if either of those will stop the engine from starting. When I went to start the bus, I get beeps and a few lights that go off within a couple of seconds… Turn the key and nothing…

The bus has always started on the first turn. Is it possible that the batteries are down that much because of the 12 and 24v being left on. Had booster cables from my truck on it for about 30 minutes and still nothing.
Is there a specific place to hook up cables? I just have them on the battery nearest the engine.
Thanks for any input. Supposed to go to Nashville in the morning and this is not the omen I was hoping for.

    Dale,

This is purely a guess because I am not familiar with your converter. My first reaction would be to charge the chassis batteries. Your converter may have provided a charger or a means to jump start the chassis batteries by means of connecting to the house batteries so when you charge the chassis batteries just make sure the house battery cable terminals are insulated from one another and the ground.

I also don’t know if your coach was set up with an alarm system that was on the house circuits that would disable the ability to start the coach. You will know if you get it to spin over and it won’t start.

As to the seat being out that will likely not allow your air system to build air properly unless the air line to the seat is plugged, but other than that the seat has no impact on starting.

We have often suggested separating the batteries and charging individually, but it the converter provided the coach with a charger just plug it into any electric outlet rather than trying to provide power through the house. You do not want the inverters to see power with the batteries out. If no charger try to get a 24 volt charger, but if not then separate the batteries, just make certain you mark the cables because one of the biggest problems folks have is putting the cables on the batteries wrong and then the bus will not start.

Thanks Jon! I was able to get it going with the help of a local diesel mechanic. Luckily, it only took a phone call. He said to put the booster cable positive on one battery and the negative on another battery. I waited 10 minutes and it spun up and started just fine. I will be better prepared next time, but it is good to know that if you end up in that position you can boost it with a 12v vehicle. Thanks!
