  • Open Neutral

So here we are at the beautiful Ellacoya State Park on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH. FHU Sites so all should be good.

Well, not so. After having spent close to 2 months in a park where we had 50 amps power, this State Park does have 30 amps, only.

So what is my problem? (you … shut-up).

Using a converter plug, 50A to 30A, I am plugged into the pedestal but the bus does not like the power and is giving me an open neutral red light warning.

I have doublechecked and tried a different pedestal and found the power coming from the pedestal appears to be clean.

Yet, inside the bus, the AC is rejected and I am on inverter power and, Halleluja, Aquahot running on diesel.

I have no problems with 50A. Yet, when I plug into 30A, there seems to be one. The bus system claims “open neutral”.

    Any advice?

    Thanks,

    Ronald

Ronald, your coach is unique and Teschner may have your wiring set up to receive 50 amp only with other voltage supplies being seen as a fault.

With a 4 wire 50 amp supply power has separate “hot” legs, a dedicated common or neutral wire and a separate ground. With 30 amp supplies you only have a single “hot” which in a converter plug is connected to both hot feeds on the 50 amp cord, along with a separate neutral and a separate ground. Theoretically the coach should view the incoming power supplies as the same.

Jon, thanks for the response. I have been on 30 amps before and had no issues then.

Well, it looks like we will have to move on earlier than planned. The neighbors would not be happy to listen to our generator.

    Hi,

Is it possible the 30 to 50 amp adapter has failed? Does the power post receptacle check out correcetly?

I second the motion, see if you cannot locate a new 50-30amp adapter dogbone. It is possible that the one you have had developed an internal defect due to age, heat, corrosion, etc.

What does the transfer switch display say in the 3rd bay driver-side?

Give me a call if I can be of any assistance.
