fuel gauge
Posted by petar on April 7, 2012 at 5:33 pmhaveing a issue with my fuel gauge. it is reading over full. i have 2 wires on the back of the gauge, 1 has 24 volt and the other is ground. i have a good ground at the sender but no power.
can someone give me a brief wireing outline on where the sender gets its power. or can i ket another direction to look.
thanks, petar i am going to take a trip soon and dont want to run out of fuel.

Petar,
See if this thread is any help.
As to running out of fuel fill the tank and refill based on miles travelled, keeping track of fuel consumption. If you determine your mileage is 5 MPG for example and you know you have a 160 gallon tank, then if you fill every 500 miles you will not run out of fuel. That’s being conservative but until you can correct the fuel gauge problem you will be OK.

thanks i have read that thread. my sending unit only has 2 wires. as does my gage.
i checked the power to stud 76 and only had 5.5 volts. nothing at 68.
i am guessing sins i have full power to the gauge and none to the sender that either i am missing a wire behind my gauge that feeds the sender or my gauge has shorted to ground and has pinned my gauge. i may have to see if prevost has a wireing diagram for my application to make sure my gauge is wired right.
thanks petar -
The 68 terminal is the wire coming directly from the sending unit in the tank. It reads ohms, not voltage.
My gauge runs with 24 volt power, a ground and a wire directly from the 68 terminal.
This is all on a 1998 Country Coach.
You state your gauge only has two wire, I think one is the wire that goes to the 68 terminal and the other is power and that maybe the sender grounds through the mounting in the tank, is your tank metal ?
Since you say you have voltage and a ground where is the wire to send an ohm reading to the front ?
Maybe your year modle is completly different.

This is a good place to start looking for wiring diagrams.
http://prevostparts.volvo.com/technicalpublications/en/manuel.asp
Initially it may seem a little confusing, but once you master the search function, starting with getting the description and VIN number for your coach correct, you should be able to navigate to the exact diagrams you need.
I find it hard to read them on the computer so I make a large drawing by enlarging the PDF diagram and printing and pasting “tiles” together to form a large readable drawing. I then have a drawing for reference.
If you are still in need of help, repost what you need to know in the “Ask Prevost” section of the forum.

i am thinking that i am missing a wire from the back of my gauge. i have 24 volt power/ i have a marking that says g for ground but i am not seing a wire to go to the sender. i should be ablel to locate this wire if i ohm out any loose wires behind the dash to the 68 pin in my side panel.
would that be correct

Just some of what I can remember about the fuel gauge. My gauge worked sometimes and sometimes it didn’t. So the first thing I did was to short the sending unit across the two post and the gauge worked. So I replaced the sending unit, still worked some time and sometimes not. The sending unit just goes to ground, nothing 24 v around it. Next I replace the gauge and it has worked fine ever since. This has been 2 or 3 years ago but thats how I remember it.
side note; While I was all the way into the fuel tank area I just decided to replace the sending unit just in case.

I have a 91 LeMirage. On mine, there is a ground right on the top of the tank that is screwed to the tank. My guage did not work when I bought the coach. I discovered that the ground wire was loose. I reattached it to the ground post on the top of the tank and now everything works like it is supposed to but before I did that, I chased down the wires and there are only two wires off the sending unit, one going to front via post 68 and a power wire. I don’t remember where the power wire came from. I am in chicago all week but could look at it again on Saturday if you ned more info. BTW, Jon is correct, the provost site for wiring diagrams is really handy once you master the search function. You need your coach number. To get it, take the VIN and starting from the right hand side, count back 8 from the right side, It should be a letter. Add that letter to the last 4 numbers of the VIN and that is your coach number. My VIN is 2P9L33407M1001839, thus my coach number is M1839. HTH.

my ground at the tank is good. i ohmed out the sender and it seems fine. i have no power at the sender. my gauge is reading past full. i have agood ground wire on my gauge,i have 24 volts on the power side of my gauge. how is the power sent to the sender. is there a third wire for the sender that is not conected off the back of my gauge. if someone can send me a picture of the back of there gauge or a good drawing that would be great

The Picture You Seek. It’s the lower gauge. They all seem to be wired the same.
Your lucky, I was just cleaning the dust behind the dash.

Petar,
The 24v side of the gauge stays there. The ground side
goes to ground through the sending unit.Starting at gauge, unhook the ground and the gauge
will/should read empty. Make sure you do this with the key on. Now hook a ground
lead to ground post from a good ground, the gauge should read full. If this
works there is a problem with the ground running from the gauge through the
sending unit and then to the ground. Please note: I have done this test and all passed just
fine. BUT my problem ended up being the gauge, it had a intermittent problem. I
finally just replaced the gauge and it has worked fine ever since. Took a while
to find it. -
thank you all. the picture sure is a big help. my gauge is missing the middle wire.
and that should be the one that feeds power to the sender.

got some time to play with the feul gauge again. a with the pictures my gauge has the three points.(p/g/s)
i have a wire to the power side of 24 volts/ i have a wire that is connected to the s terminal. i am thinking that one goes to the sender. i have nothing at the g terminal. currently as previously mentioned my gauge reads over full. when i remove the wire that is attached to the (s) terminal my gauge goes to empty. when all reconected and i apply a ground to the (g) terminal. it stays on the full mark. my tank has full about 4 inches from the top of the tank. i may have to remove some full and put it in my smart car deisel so it reads half and then i can see if the gauge will move.

good day folks. got my fuel gauge to finaly work. previous owners thoght they should wrap the sender wire in electrical tape and hide it under the dash. when i ground out the sending wire my gauge jumps to full. i am suspecting a faulty sender. my question is. can i use any sender or does it need to be a 24 volt sender.
thanks and hope you all have a happy day of bussing.

thanks to everyone. got my new feul level sender in today. all installed and i now have the sad news of knowing i only have a 1/4 tank of fuel. now i get to fill the bus for the first time. and at 1.14 dollar per litre of diesel i am not looking forward to it
once again thank you all for your help. petar
