  • 10-15 amp 110 v shorepower charging capabilities?

Posted by Bill on November 7, 2023 at 10:11 am

My 91 Prevost marathon has original Hart 2500 inverters. My last eight 4D agm house batteries lasted just over three years. Can 10-15 amps of shore power run through my shore power cord and into my converters keep my batteries charged up properly during long storage?

There are some varying opinions on this subject, my opinion is don’t leave it plugged in for long periods of time. Depending on how your bus is setup with parasitic loads and what your Battery charger profile is set at you might be better leaving it unplugged and watching your battery voltage to see if it drops. Without any draws and all the disconnects off your batteries should sit nice and stable. My bus can sit for 2 months with all the disconnects off and my battery voltage is 12.7-12.8.

I have 4 Lifeline 8D batteries when I bought bus 7 years ago it had the Lifelines for about a year in it, and also had Xantrex Heart inverter and always had it plugged in at the house, a year later I installed 2 new Magnum 2812 inverters and again I leave plugged 24-7, but I always turn off charger on 1 of the inverters while stored at home. I do that because the Magnum’s go in to full charge mode during the cycles I think they go to 13.8 or 13.4 then shut off till like 12.8 I may be off a little but they vary the batteries with both chargers they won’t sink up together and won’t vary voltage. Last motor home was a Foretravel with 1 Heart inverter and 4 6 volt golf cart batteries and batteries lasted for 5 or so years.

Not sure if they have input limiters on your inverter but you can easily just get a battery charger like this and wired right to the batteries.

Victron Energy Blue Smart IP22 12-Volt 15 amp 120VAC, Single Output Battery Charger NEMA 5-15, Bluetooth https://a.co/d/4649XuQ

BTW Victron inverters allow me to set the input limit down so I can hit a button and plug in 10a extension cord or 50a

If you can find (maybe online if you don’t have) the manual for your inverters, I believe you will find there are dip switches on the back of your remote panels which can be adjusted to limit charging draw. Inconvenient.

My inverters (outback) can be set from the front of the remote panels. When on gen and wanr fast charge, I set to max draw (20 amps each) and when plugged in at home (110v) or using a/c and plugged in at park (50 amp) I can limit to 5 amp draw each.

Xantrex basic remote, I gave 2 away awhile ago when I installed Magnums 2812 I had bought the basic remotes before I replaced much easier to use but they were like $ 125 bucks apiece it ended up being a waste of money when 1 heart failed
