  • Liberty, maverick ATS switch replacement component

Posted by Chas on August 28, 2018 at 7:51 pm

Looking at swapping out a possible bad component in the ATS switch found in liberty coaches. I believe the overall switch is produced by maverick, which seems to focus on generac home generator switches now.

Looking to replace the shore line magnetic connector.

Can anyone confirm that the telemecanique LC1 D8011 is the proper replacement? If someone has any information on the magnetic connectorsth see that are used in the ATS switch assembly, that would be appreciated. Also do the port, starboard and geni use the same magnetic connectors?

Have you called Liberty to see if they can tell you this? I am sure that Bill or someone else at N.Chicago should be able to tell you….

As with all conversations, things are done slightly different. Liberty looks like they designed their own system. Not a bad thing because when you think about it, it’s a basic switch with delays built in.

Here is what I have, two connectors, two different model numbers. Need to determine which is for shore and which is for geni.

It would take less time to call Liberty than to keep posting. Some reason you can’t or won’t call them?

Just a word of caution………be very careful working on the transfer switch. I am sure I am stating the obvious, but some things need to be respected, and the amount of electrical power in that box is one of them.

You can do a lot of diagnosis easily because you can hear or observe the action of the contactors by connecting or disconnecting shore power. The selector switch on the side of the box allows you to do that without running back and forth to the shore power pedestal.

Ditto with the generator because you can use the switches in the next compartment to start the generator, and because it has the delay you can move back to the first bay to observe when its contactor pulls in.

If the issue relates to the time delay relays (orange devices), just switch them around to see if the problem follows the relay.

While you are in there and sure you are safe, make sure all the connections to the contactors are tight.

Be safe Charles. There is a great potential for injury in that box.

I don’t know Jack S*** about this stuff and since buying a Prevost haven’t stayed in a Holiday Inn Express (but I found the exchange and pictures very interesting and educational, I have a better understanding of what is happening when I plug and unplug shore power and hear the “clicks” in the coach).

I decided some time ago not to try to out think Liberty coach, the Konigseders, Bill Doherty, and the people who have advised them. Unless you really understand what you’re doing (and I would NOT in this case), be careful about re-engineering what’s already there.

About Calling Liberty – I dont have a business relationship with Liberty. I own a product that they built 20 years ago. That coach has been sold twice since they sold it to it’s original owner. Just calling Liberty for something that may be known on these forums is how I like to do a first approach. If it’s beyond the knowledge fo the members and beyond Jeff’s knowledge, then I call Liberty. Since the chances of me actually buying the part from Liberty is probably not a 100% possibility, I dont feel its right to take advantage of their resources for something such as this, unless I can’t figure it out through these other channels.

Jon – Yes, electricity is a dangerous thing. When I go to replace a connector (or both), I will most likely disconnect from the shore power, turn the power switch off above the inverters and then power down inverters taking the entire coach offline at that point. swap out the connector(s) and then bring it all back online.

Other option is to take a road trip to Eastern Tennessee and bring the motorcycle with me 🙂

Re-Engineering – Not going to happen. The system is well thought out, works perfect and there is no reason to re-work anything. Just simple replace a potentially faulty connector with a direct swap-in replacement part.

Right now its not a 911. Even when the connector had an issue, I still had line 1, which provided me with all important items (2 AC, fridge, water pump, oven, outlets, etc.). Running the geni provided me with full power to both legs. So I dont need to rush through this (oh ye, after running the generator for a couple hours, taking the opportunity to swap out surge protectors and moving back to shore, the switch worked fine and has been working fine for 3 days now. I’ll still figure out the connector I need and replace it as it did error once, telling me it can happen again).

Charles, I understand your reluctance to impose on Liberty, but as a long time owner of Liberty Coaches I can tell you that Liberty has done an outstanding job of providing support for the coaches despite their age and regardless of whether you bought it from Liberty or not.

I agree with your reasoning regarding them not being first on your list, but don’t hesitate to ask them questions. They built a strong following because of that support.

Bill Doherty in Chicago and Troy in Fl has been very helpful to me in the past. 5-10 minutes with them on the phone could save you hours and hours of scratching your head.
